The #European Commission has amended Directive 2002/59/EC to enhance #maritime safety and environmental protection. A new Delegated Directive updates #EU Mandatory Ship Reporting Systems, requiring all vessels—including those not entering EU ports but passing through EU waters—to provide insurance information. This measure strengthens oversight of uninsured or unsafe ships, improves the EU’s ability to monitor maritime activity, and supports preparedness among coastal states. It reflects a commitment to safer, more environmentally responsible shipping, aligning EU regulations with international standards amid growing risks from hazardous cargo and geopolitical tensions. The EU and its Member States have also proposed related updates to existing reporting systems at the International Maritime Organization.

Hey #history and #maritime and #shipping expert people:

Here's a dataset about #whaling with some variables I don't understand (neither do the students using it for an intro #statistics project). If you have any insight into what these variables/terms mean, will you share that?

  • Number of whales struck (does this mean "harpooned," maybe?)
  • Number of whales tried out (no idea)

The data are here:

An accord reached in London under the International #Maritime Organization [#IMO], a #UN agency, would require every ship that ferries goods across the oceans to lower their #GreenhouseGas #emissions or pay a fee.

The targets fall short of what many had hoped. Still, it’s the first time a global industry would face a price on its #climate #pollution no matter where in the world it operates. The proceeds would be used mainly to help the industry move to cleaner fuels.

The industry produces about 3 percent of planet-warming emissions globally, on par with aviation. A cargo ship near Vancouver, British Columbia.

At least 10% or 76 tankers of the Russian shadow fleet that regularly sails Baltic waters are insured via companies that do not exist.

Along a further 179 ships with the same fake 'insurance'.

If one of these decrepit ships damages anything or lets a shipload of oil into the sea, there is no coverage. Russian ships running around faux insured.

IMOs take action now! The basis for investigation and impounding. Is the lack of insurance justifying actions only at port ops or also during sailing?

There are a large number of grounds that could be argued in favor of inspections and detentions, and this is likely one of the stronger ones. You cannot play by the rules if the other side keeps breaking them without implications. Stop the russian terror ships ffs. original post from Auonsson ‪@auonsson.bsky.social‬

Norwegian fake insurance company working for Russian shadow fleet gets blacklisted after investigation by Danwatch.dk

UPDATE on the Russian fraud factory in #Norway. After our investigation, flag states across the globe are banning Ro Marine from their countries. Meanwhile the company keeps updating their database with new vessels seemingly carrying the fake and illegal insurance.

#Europe can no longer afford such security lapses. The economic criminality of Autocracy Inc. needs to become the focus of law enforcement.

Just seen a comment on FB from a chap in #Essex whose dad is in the #RNLI - his dad has been told by the #security team *not* to wear uniform off duty for his own safety due to the level of backlash against RNLI helping #migrants (from people who have 0 idea of how #maritime operations work, and that the whole concept of that service is to retrieve humans (and sometimes other creatures) who have ended up in the sea / tidal waterway but didn't intend to be there)..

The #Maritime #Accessibility Conference 2025, organised by the Department for #Transport (DfT) and the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA), brought together #disability organisations and maritime transport operators to discuss accessibility in the sector. Held at the Museum of Liverpool on 25 March, the conference featured talks, networking, and discussions aimed at improving communication between the maritime industry, government, and disability groups. Key speakers included DfT, MCA, #Disabled Persons Transport Advisory Committee (DPTAC), and various vessel and port operators. Topics included the REAL training programme (Respect, Empathise, Ask, Listen) and the sharing of accessibility experiences. Maritime Minister Mike Kane emphasised the importance of ensuring accessible, safe, and dignified travel for all.

The #UK government has unveiled a #maritime #decarbonisation strategy aiming for net-zero emissions by 2050. The plan includes the use of future fuels and shipping ‘chargeports’ to reduce #emissions, starting with the most polluting vessels. Targets are set for a 30% emissions reduction by 2030, 80% by 2040, and zero by 2050. The strategy also incorporates clean technologies like hydrogen and electric vessels. The government is investing in green technologies and fuels, supporting UK #manufacturing and creating skilled jobs, particularly in coastal communities. UK ports are investing in new technologies to support decarbonisation, including renewable shore power. The plan also includes the UK Emissions Trading Scheme for larger vessels. The maritime sector is set to play a significant role in the UK’s green energy transition. The UK is pushing for similar global targets at the International Maritime Organization’s meeting in April.

The #G7 Foreign Ministers reaffirmed commitment to a free, secure #maritime domain, crucial for #global stability and economic resilience. They expressed concern over threats to navigation, illicit #shipping, and environmental damage, emphasising #UNCLOS and regional security frameworks.

Ministers condemned attempts to alter the maritime status quo by force, particularly in the South China Sea and Taiwan Strait. They pledged to protect undersea infrastructure, combat maritime crime, and coordinate efforts against illicit shipping. The G7 also committed to enhancing supply chain resilience, food and energy security, and addressing illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing. Ongoing cooperation with international partners will ensure sustainable maritime security and prosperity.
