Commissioner Tzitzikostas today hosted an implementation dialogue in #Brussels on improving #EU high-speed rail connectivity. Efficient cross-border rail links are vital for EU cohesion, competitiveness, and decarbonising #transport, yet fragmentation of the TEN-T network remains. The meeting gathered #European industry leaders, social partners, and stakeholders to discuss timely #infrastructure implementation, better passenger services, and removing ticketing barriers. The exchange will feed into the Commission’s upcoming high-speed rail action plan. This is the first of Commissioner Tzitzikostas’s biannual dialogues, as tasked by President von der Leyen, to better align EU initiatives with on-the-ground realities. He stated: “High-speed rail is key to a connected, competitive, and climate-friendly Europe.” Participant list and conclusions will be published on the dialogue’s webpage.

#Alstom has signed a €60 million contract to upgrade 82 BR 490 S-Bahn #Hamburg #trains in #Germany with the #European Train Control System (ETCS) and semi-automated ATO (GoA2) technology. This #digitalisation project will enhance capacity, improve efficiency, and reduce energy consumption. Four prototype trains will be upgraded and re-certified by 2029 at Alstom’s Hennigsdorf site, while #Deutsche Bahn will retrofit the remaining 78 using Alstom-supplied equipment. This marks a major step in the full digitalisation of Hamburg’s S-Bahn fleet and supports Germany’s broader shift towards greener, smarter rail #transport.

A #European Commission study reveals a critical shortage of Safe and Secure Parking Areas (SSPAs) for professional drivers in the EU, with a gap of 390,057 spaces expected to grow to 483,000 by 2040. While some parking areas have implemented safety features, many remain uncertified under #EU standards. This is a particular concern in countries like #Germany, #Belgium, #France, #Italy, and #Spain, where crime rates against drivers and vehicles are high. The study recommends strategic investments, including upgrading and certifying existing facilities, as a fast and cost-effective solution. It also emphasises the importance of improved connectivity and digitalisation for accessibility. The European Commission has committed significant funding, with around 65 parking areas already built or under construction through the Connecting #Europe Facility. By 2040, a comprehensive, safe parking network is expected to be in place, supporting the EU’s road #transport system.
