Populist/authoritarian régimes which manage to survive at least short-medium term, do so by looking after lower-middle class men - providing them with jobs, cars, highways, cheap fuel (oligarchs' palaces, prisons and highways don't build themselves, but there are plenty willing to hold their nose and do this work if the wages are good).

This could be the achilles heel of the USA - which seems to be only destroying even its own basic #infrastructure (including safety critical organisations)

“Our first home buyer #mortgage #deductibility scheme is going to finally give first home buyers the firepower they need to purchase a #home.

We’re going to, through our housing #infrastructure program, deliver more homes for those first home #buyers.

So if you think the status quo is OK, that’s really what #Labor is offering.

The #Coalition (#LNP / #Liberal) believes that home #ownership is something that every generation of #Australians deserve, and that’s precisely what we’ll deliver, if we’re given the great honour of being elected” — #MichaelSukkar

Commissioner Tzitzikostas today hosted an implementation dialogue in #Brussels on improving #EU high-speed rail connectivity. Efficient cross-border rail links are vital for EU cohesion, competitiveness, and decarbonising #transport, yet fragmentation of the TEN-T network remains. The meeting gathered #European industry leaders, social partners, and stakeholders to discuss timely #infrastructure implementation, better passenger services, and removing ticketing barriers. The exchange will feed into the Commission’s upcoming high-speed rail action plan. This is the first of Commissioner Tzitzikostas’s biannual dialogues, as tasked by President von der Leyen, to better align EU initiatives with on-the-ground realities. He stated: “High-speed rail is key to a connected, competitive, and climate-friendly Europe.” Participant list and conclusions will be published on the dialogue’s webpage.

After sharing Ed Zitron's latest piece called "OpenAI Is A Systemic Risk To The Tech Industry" I got a few responses arguing in a similar way: People agree that "AI" and especially "generative AI" is a massive bubble that does not really make much sense - if you imply rational decision making. Training the models, building the data centers, inference, inflated wages, potential licence costs and the costs of damages ... economically the whole sector doesn't make too much sense (Sequioa […]

Network Rail has won the Spotlight Net Zero Pioneer Award for its innovative ‘hedgehog’ sleeper design. Made from 90% recycled materials, the KLP® Hybrid Polymer "Hedgehog" Track Sleeper lasts twice as long as concrete sleepers, reduces carbon emissions, and can be replaced mechanically for quicker installation. The sleepers, which resemble hedgehogs beneath the rails, are expected to roll out in early 2026. They contain 90% less carbon than wooden sleepers and 78% less than concrete ones, potentially reducing carbon emissions by 24.5 million kg annually if used to replace concrete sleepers. This #innovation aligns with Network Rail's goal of reducing carbon emissions in #railway #infrastructure. The design has been praised for its sustainability and potential to transform #rail #transport.

China's Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge is set to open this year, becoming the world's tallest bridge at 625 metres high. Recent footage of the bridge has been released, showing crews putting on the finishing touches.

Construction began in 2022, and took just three years to complete. The bridge is nearly over a kilometre long and stands nine times higher than the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. It will cut travel time for drivers from an hour to a minute.
