Democratic leaders are telling their party's biggest donors that keeping Montana's Senate seat blue is a real challenge.
However, they are planning to go on offense in Florida to retain their majority.
Why it matters:
Without Montana, the math for Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) to keep his job gets very difficult.
But Democrats are signaling they want to expand the playing field and be in a position to steal Republican seats in states like #Florida.
-- Yes, it's still red, but former President Trump isn't expected to win by double digits.
They are also eyeing #Texas, where a recent poll has Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) up by three points against Rep. #Colin #Allred (D-Texas).
Driving the news:
Officials acknowledged Sen. #Jon #Tester (D-Mont.) is down in the polls, but party strategists still see a path for him to defy the odds and win, just like Sen. Susan Collins of Maine did on the Republican side in 2020.
"It sounds like Gary Peters is thinking about abandoning Jon Tester," NRSC spokesperson Philip Letsou told Axios. "No matter what Democrats do, the NRSC will do whatever it takes to ensure Ted Cruz and Rick Scott defeat the radical liberals Chuck Schumer and his billionaire allies have propped up against them."
The intrigue:
Republicans held their donor retreat just up the coast in Sea Island, Georgia, where the National Republican Senatorial Committee explained why they are eyeing a 52-seat majority.
At both events, there was a mixture of hope and fear.
In addition to Montana, there were concerns about #Ohio, where Sen. #Sherrod #Brown (D-Ohio) faces a tough re-election in a state Trump could carry by eight or nine percentage points.
The most optimistic pitch the Democratic donors received was from #Tennessee state Rep. #Gloria #Johnson, their party's nominee to defeat Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.) in a race the Cook Political Report is rating a "solid R."
What we're hearing:
Democrats are contemplating a late blitz in the Florida Senate race, where Sen. Rick Scott (R-Fla) has just a two-point lead over former Rep. #Debbie #Mucarsel-#Powell in the latest public poll.
While air time hasn't been officially booked, Democratic sources tell us they expect the DSCC to make a splash in Florida in the coming weeks.
From Labor Day to Election Day, Democrats have spent or reserved some $5.6 million in advertising in Florida, according to AdImpact.
Over the same period, Republicans are at $4.4 million, but Scott's campaign likes to buy week to week, meaning they could pump more money into the race if they feel it's warranted.

Republicans are all but guaranteed to pick up at least one seat,
putting even more pressure on Democrats to win seven other highly competitive races,
including two in red states.
Senate Democrats face a grueling and narrow path to maintain their slim 51-49 majority this fall,
as they prepare to defend 23 seats across the United States,
many of them in purple and red states
With Sen. Joe #Manchin III (I-W.Va.) retiring,
Republicans are all but guaranteed to pick up at least one seat in that ruby red state,
putting even more pressure on Sens. Sherrod #Brown (D-Ohio) and Jon #Tester (D-Mont.) to defy political gravity once again in their red states and win reelection.
Only 11 Republican-held seats are up for election in November. If Republicans win those races as expected and flip just one state, the Senate will be tied 50-50 with deciding votes made by the new vice president.
If they flip two seats, Republicans will win back Senate control no matter who is in the White House.

and said the Republican National Committee was working at an effort to #repeat those efforts this year.
He made #xenophobic comments about migrants coming to the U.S. illegally, 
falsely said Harris was letting some “roam free” to assault, #rape and #murder Americans, and falsely claimed she would give undocumented immigrants all the benefits Americans enjoy.
“It’s going to be called a #Trump #mass #deportation, because we have no choice. We have no choice. If Harris wins, a never-ending stream of illegal alien #rapists,” Trump said, ironically.
He also made snide comments about Senator #Jon #Tester’s appearance, chided his support for the Inflation Reduction Act,

As he campaigns in one of the nation’s most competitive U.S. Senate races, #Montana Republican #Tim #Sheehy recounts how he
started an aerial firefighting business in his barn
and built it into a publicly traded company on the front lines of increasingly dangerous wildfires.
“That’s a success story,” he said in a June television interview.
Reports filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission in recent months tell
a different story about Bridger Aerospace, known for its “Super Scooper” planes that can remove up to 1,400 gallons at a time from a body of water to dump on a nearby wildfire.
Bridger is facing a cash crunch so dire that 
there is “substantial doubt about the Company’s ability to continue,” according to public filings that show 
the company lost $77.4 million last year and $20.1 million in the first three months of 2024.
Several directors have left, including one who flagged concerns about internal auditing, as an unusually slow wildfire season in 2023 put the company at risk of defaulting on its debt.
And then last month, Sheehy said he couldn’t devote enough time to running the company and resigned
— a move that Bridger, which had promoted his key role in “every facet” of the business, previously said would happen if he was elected to the Senate.

A new Emerson College Polling/The Hill survey puts Trump-backed Republican #Tim #Sheehy with a 2-point lead over Tester, 48 percent to 46 percent. Another 5 percent were undecided. Tester is one of the most vulnerable incumbents this cycle, a rare Democrat holding office in a state Biden lost back in 2020, and his race could determine which party ends up controlling the upper chamber.
The poll also marks a shift from March, when the same pollster found Tester up by 2 points over his Republican challenger.
Because the gap falls within the survey’s 3-point margin of error, the race remains a potential tie between the two Senate race rivals.
This week, Tester launched a “Republicans for Tester” group to rally support from across the aisle as he braces for a competitive November contest.
At the top of the ticket, Trump is a whopping 15 percentage points ahead of Harris, but the vice president’s 40 percent support is a notable 5-point improvement from the 35 percent President Biden garnered back in March.

for just three Senate races:

A fierce battle for control of the Senate is fueling the expected record-breaking ad spending this election cycle.
The investment so far points to the races both parties deem most critical for the majority.
Democrats have long held a fundraising advantage over Republicans, which is helping them play defense in nine competitive Senate races.
Ohio is the only Senate race in which Republicans have been spending more than Democrats on campaign ads and reservations
— though this is largely due to it having one of the only highly competitive Senate GOP primaries this year.
Republican Bernie Moreno won the Ohio primary and will face Democratic incumbent Sen. #Sherrod #Brown in November.
The showdowns between Sen. #Bob #Casey (D) and Dave McCormick in Pennsylvania

setting him up for a November showdown against Senator Jon #Tester, the Democratic incumbent.
Montana also has a semi-competitive House race.
Representative Ryan #Zinke, a Republican, and Monica #Tranel, a Democrat,
will officially face off in November in a rematch of their 2022 contest,
which Zinke won by 3 percentage points.
Zinke is the favorite again, and the race is considered “likely Republican.”
