Today in Labor History April 21, 1834: 30,000 workers marched for the freedom of six trade unionists who were transported to Australia from Tolpuddle, Britain. The Tolpuddle struggle, which began in 1832, marked the beginning of British trade unionism. The workers were fighting for the repeal of the “Combination Laws,” which outlawed the formation of unions. The Tolpuddle Martyrs were pardoned in 1836, thanks to the popular protests.

While all eyes are on the Trump/Musk fascist take-over of the U.S. government, their looting and graft, their authoritarian mass arrests and deportations, the U.S. government has been quietly supporting a coup in Ecuador, with virtually no coverage by the U.S. media.

And also with very little media coverage, continued slaughter of Yemeni civilians by the U.S., with airstrikes on Friday killing over 80, in a region already suffering from mass hunger and infectious disease. Why? To gain control over Red Sea shipping routes and to punish Houthis for their support of Palestinians and their resistance to the genocide there.

The shuttered DHS Office for Civil Rights and Civil Liberties “was one of the very few tools we had to check ICE, to hold ICE accountable,” immigration lawyer Sophia Genovese said. “Now you see them speeding to complete authoritarianism.”

So, I was on an American flight from London to Dallas yesterday and the plane was barely half full. I had an entire row all to myself. Maybe a lot of people decided they didn't care to visit the US after all, that flight is always packed wall to wall.

Hundreds of scholars have had their visas revoked and dozens have been detained.

What’s exceptional about Öztürk’s case is how her detention was caught on camera.

What’s scariest, immigration lawyers say, is how little is known about all the others.

Mad orange Nazi says he wants to send people with mental health disorders who commit violent crimes to prisons in El Salvador. "They need to be taken out “ its legit a quote from him.. 😔
In Nazi Germany the mentally ill were the first to be exterminated.
They are more likely to be the victims of violent crimes not the perpetrators.

Among those at the Bluebonnet detention center that the #ACLU is seeking to protect from #deportation is a 19-year-old known as Y.S.M.

Y.S.M., court papers say, was arrested by #immigration agents on March 14 & was sent to the Bluebonnet facility this week. When the agents initially questioned him, court papers say, they told him that a photograph on Facebook showing him in the presence of another person holding a gun proved he was a member of Tren de Aragua.

But then on Friday, other #Venezuelan immigrants at the detention center were informed that they were facing imminent #deportation, court papers say. One of them, known as F.G.M., was instructed to sign a removal waiver in English, even though he speaks only Spanish.

When he refused to sign, #immigration officers told him the waiver was “coming from the president,” according to court papers, “and that he will be deported even if he did not sign it.”

This latest iteration of the fight over the use of the #AlienEnemiesAct began on Wednesday when the #ACLU filed suit in Abilene on behalf of 2 #Venezuelan immigrants being held at the Bluebonnet facility, asking Judge Hendrix to shield them against #deportation. But the judge denied the request, largely because lawyers for the #DOJ told him that the men — known only by their initials, A.A.R.P. & W.M.M. — had not yet been scheduled for removal from the country.

#ACLU attys started w/an emergency filing in Federal Dist Court in Abilene, #Texas, in which they claimed that officers at the Bluebonnet Detention Center in Anson had started distributing notices to #Venezuelan immigrants informing them that they could face #deportation as soon as Fri night.
They asked Judge Hendrix, who is overseeing the case, to issue an immediate order protecting all immigrants in the Northern District of TX who might face deportation under the #AlienEnemiesAct.

A lawsuit filed in NH late Friday aims to present a sweeping legal challenge to the #Trump administration’s campaign targeting #international #students & #academics.

Lawyers asked a federal judge to certify a lawsuit brought by foreign students whose #visas were canceled as a class action.

The suit aims to to stop similar #detentions & #deportation efforts for students in NH, ME, MA, RI & Puerto Rico. It also asks the court to reinstate the student #visas that have been terminated.
