#Trump is proposing to cut, by $2.4B, a program that offers low-cost financing for #WaterQuality projects, targeting the largest source of federal funds for #DrinkingWater utilities, #sewage treatment plants & other #infrastructure like #water #pipes.

The program had gotten a major boost under #Biden’s #infrastructure #law. But Trump claims the money was “heavily earmarked by the #Congress for projects that are ultimately not repaid into the program, & bypass states’ interest & planning.”

"Gaza residents share fears of thirst after Israel destroys water resources | Al Jazeera Newsfeed" [3:30 min]

Quote by AJE:
"Apr 10, 2025
Israel has bombed one of Gaza’s only operational water desalination plants that was supplying clean drinking water to the strip. Many Palestinians now fear dying of thirst before being killed in the ongoing bombardment."

The #law, which was signed by #Republican Gov #SpencerCox on March 27 & will go into effect on May 7, comes amid renewed scrutiny of #fluoride, a mineral that has been widely added to US #DrinkingWater since 1945 to prevent cavities. Controversy over the safety of water fluoridation has intensified in recent years, driven in part by #ConspiracyTheories & by growing resistance to #PublicHealth interventions since the #pandemic.

#US #wildfire suppressants rife with #toxic #heavymetals
Study reveals widely used pink wildfire suppressants contain high levels of toxic heavy metals: #cadmium, #arsenic, and #chromium, concentrations up to 3,000x above #drinkingwater limits. While gov and chemical makers have long concealed up to 20% of suppressants' ingredients as "trade secrets" researchers have confirmed their role in environmental #pollution, raising concerns over extensive use in residential areas

#Water users whose #grants have been paused said they are asking the federal govt for more info & getting little in the way of answers. The #FederalAgencies in charge of Western water did not respond to NPR's requests for comment [probably because they were fired by #Musk].

#Conservation programs like the one sending money to #California #farmers have been key in boosting water supplies in major #reservoirs.

…Some #water experts say they are surprised to see these water conservation programs frozen by #Trump's executive order, since they do not appear to be in line w/the president's stated priorities of eliminating #diversity programs & boosting domestic #energy production.

"These are not woke environmental programs," said Anne Castle, who held federal water policy roles…. "These are essential to continued ability to divert #water."

The #ColoradoRiver is shrinking due to #ClimateChange, which means the nation's 2 largest #reservoirs, #LakeMead & #LakePowell, created by #dams, have reached record low levels in recent years amid a #megadrought spanning >2 decades. If #water levels fall much lower, they could lose the ability to generate #hydropower within the massive dams that hold them back, or even lose the ability to pass water downstream.

But the order also says, "All agencies shall immediately pause the disbursement of funds appropriated through the #InflationReductionAct of 2022”

While some of those funds were earmarked to prop up #RenewableEnergy, at least $4B was set aside to protect the flow of the #ColoradoRiver, which supplies about 40M people w/ #DrinkingWater, is the foundation for a massive #agriculture #economy across the Southwest, & generates significant #hydroelectric power.

Funding Freeze Includes Payments to Keep the #ColoradoRiver Flowing

The first EO #Trump signed…,"Unleashing American Energy," wouldn't seem to have a direct impact on how much water is in the Colorado River….

The order…aims to "unleash America's affordable & reliable energy & natural resources," by ending "burdensome & ideologically motivated regulations” [read: #ClimateChange solutions & #conservation efforts]

"Winston Peters says New Zealand First has proposed a Member's Bill aimed at returning fluoridation decision-making power to local communities."

Even a stopped clock is right twice a day. I can't see any reason for this to be a central government decision.

Early ‘forever chemicals’ exposure could affect economic success
Military began using #PFAS firefighting foam in 1970s, which contaminated #drinkingwater in and around bases. Those who lived in regions with firefighting training areas earned about 1.7% on average less later in life, and showed graduation rate about 1% lower. Those born between 1981-1988 earned about $1bn less, or about $1,000/person, compared to those who did not live near the firefighting training sites.
