This weekend I made a lot of progress on my Classic Mac OS app template in C!

I have ideas for tools I want to make (mainly for #GlobalTalk), but i need a foundation to build on. AIRConfig was built on of some very basic sample code included with MPW and really not suitable for extending even as far as AIRConfig went.

There are also full-blown frameworks like MacApp and PowerPlant, but they seem like quite a lot of complexity to learn just for small tools.

@chris

It seems likely he will be removed if this election plays out as the current conservative pollsters are pushing: they are clearly pushing the narrative of "if not #CPC, then #LPC at any cost!"

Which I find extremely telling. Do we really want to elect Angus Reid's second choice after #PP?

Reality is: most #BC and #AB ridings are more likely to elect #NDP or CPC than LPC. This may be true in #SK & #MB, and elsewhere. We need clean data from the sources, not Fournier's weighted model.

And my second #MARCHintosh is over! Another great year!

My stated goals were
1. Release TalkCrawler
2. Rewrite the networking in GlobalTalk Chat
3. Recap a IIvi/IIcx to replace my PB540 as router

An unstated goal was
4. To get a printer on #GlobalTalk

I completed 1 in time for March 1, and 2 by the middle of the month, 2 felt like redemption for something that felt like failure last year. Never had the time/desk space for 3, but maybe that'll be a good post-March project? #mb… (1/5)

I picked up an ImageWriter II for cheap, it was the only one where the auction photos didn't have the error lamp on.

Alas, the belt drive motor is rusted and completely seized. Looks like replacements are also not at all worth it.

It's a shame, this is the only spot in the whole machine with evidence of rust, the rest looks fine!

Sometimes I feel like I’m in a living museum. I’ve been supporting my friends karaoke bar since it opened in March 2020, and just like 3 weeks ago I noticed a button in their karaoke system

The system is from 2012 (but still common and kept updated with new songs). It has an IR port and i saw it supports sending photos from feature phones via IrDA to display and draw on on the karaoke screen. I had to test this!

Today I brought my Sony Clie and damn, it still works!

Busted out the old Sony Clie to charge, next week I have something I want to try that needs a device that can shoot photos and send them over IrDA.

Was reminded that I had bought one of those CF Wi-Fi adapters (PEGA WL100) I never got around to trying out…

It works great! WebPro does seem a bit glitchy on this device, any recommendations for PalmOS 4.5 compatible browsers?

Finally all the parts arrived to build a custom router capable of 10 Gbit to replace the rental ISP router!

The basis for the router is a Lenovo ThinkCentre Tiny M720q I got off Yahoo! Auctions for $70 with CPU, RAM and NVMe all included.

The 10 Gbit fiber option showed up for my address today, on schedule!

Got my line transfer authorization number and applied to an ISP that supports 10 Gbps with a static IP option, so we’ll see how long this takes to set up.

ISP is getting back to me in 2 days and then NTT usually takes 2 weeks+ I think to do their end of things.

Stopped by the local city planetarium with the kids to get out of the heat. It's a very cute affair, with a 44 year old projector and a rim full of remote controlled slide projectors for the constellations and mirrors on spinning motors for shooting stars etc. The presenter has a flashlight with an arrow shape to point things out. Peeking behind the control desk, there's a PC98 with an extra external floppy drive, presumably to program the sequence.

iOS 18 has massively broken adding your new iPhone as a Trusted Device to a secondary Apple Account. Figured it out though!

The old way was adding it as an account in “Passwords & Accounts" - gone

Apple's docs tell you to log out of your main account, which as we all know, messes up your phone for days

To whom it may concern: MiniDV capture using the FireWire to Thunderbolt adapter in QuickTime Player still works in macOS Sequoia, using the same "legacy camera plugins" option as in Sonoma support.apple.com/en-us/108387

I'm always worried they're going to kill legacy features like this with every update.

Apple SupportIf you can't use your camera or video output device after updating to macOS Sonoma 14.1 - Apple SupportStarting in macOS Sonoma 14.1, cameras and video output devices that don't use modern system extensions won't be available to use unless you restore the legacy settings.
