It was built on QNX, with a modern swipe/gesture based UI built with Qt. </p><p>Arguably a better OS than the iOS and Android releases at that same time.</p><p>There was a feature called the Hub, which wax a unified inbox for your email messages, social posts, and text messages. Konrad Hinsen<p>Are there good (re-)use cases for an iMac G4? Under MacOS X, it still works but is probably not safe for use on a network. Linux support for PowerPC Macs looks bad.</p><p>One idea is to run VNC on it and use it as a desktop display for a laptop. argv minus one<p>Today I learned that some parallel ports—the humble 25-pin ports also known as <a href="https://mastodon.sdf.org/tags/LPT" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LPT</span></a> ports—had a surprisingly-non-horrible 2.5MB/s (20Mbps) of bandwidth in ECP mode.</p><p>That explains why some external disk drives (Zip, CD, etc) used them. That is indeed enough bandwidth to reasonably read/write those disks.</p><p>They were originally used for printers, though, not for bandwidth but for simplicity: with all 7 bits of an ASCII character arriving together, the printer didn't need a buffer.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.sdf.org/tags/retrocomputing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>retrocomputing</span></a></p>
