On March 3rd, Greg Suligowski of #Merseyrail represented #Transport #UK at #UNESCO's World Engineering Day in #Paris, #France. The theme, Unleashing the Power of #Engineers to Advance the SDGs, emphasised the role of engineering in sustainable development. Discussions focused on integrating sustainability into decision-making and the need for engineers to engage with policymakers for informed, sustainable investments. Emerging technologies, such as #AI, were explored, highlighting both their benefits and challenges. Transport UK is leading the way in sustainable transport solutions, from battery-operated trains in Liverpool to hydrogen-powered trains in development. In #London, TUK bus depots now feature electric bus charging stations. The event celebrated global engineering talent and reinforced Transport UK's commitment to sustainability and the UN's SDG #11.

Transport UKTransport UK in Paris for UNESCO's World Engineering Day Launch — Transport UKMerseyrail’s Greg Suligowsi recounts his experience of representing Transport UK at UNESCO’s World Engineering Day in Paris

Do I know any #Canada #Canadian #engineers on here?

I'm trying to understand the licensing process to be a professional engineer in BC or Alberta. There's the NPPE which is....a professional practices exam? And there's work experience and such

Is there a knowledge exam like what the USA does in most (all?) states for our PE tests? Like where you do problems on thermo/fluids, AC and DC circuits, materials, etc?

I'm looking at academic positions that require professional engineer registration.

Some warnings about weather data when using -->
earth.nullschool.net

Text is:

#Weather and #climate data shown on this website and countless others are at risk.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (#NOAA) is the U.S. agency responsible for global weather #forecasting, #hurricane #prediction, #ocean #observation, and many other services vital to public safety. Its #satellites, #supercomputers, and research teams provide essential #data that help us understand our #planet and #protect #lives.

On February 27, the new U.S. administration initiated mass firings at NOAA. These actions are #unethical and deeply #disruptive to the talented #scientists and #engineers who dedicate themselves to the public good. The firings, along with expected budget cuts, have serious implications for the availability and #quality of #WeatherForecasts produced by the #UnitedStates. They must be reversed immediately.

Much of the data on this website is downloaded directly from NOAA's servers. In this environment of uncertainty, access could be #disrupted at any time. While I'll strive to keep all features on this website functional and switch to alternative data sources if necessary, some datasets have no substitute if they go offline.

If this concerns you, speak up. Share on #SocialMedia. And if you're in the U.S., contact your representatives.

How Elon Musk Executed His Takeover of the Federal Bureaucracy

The operation was driven with a frenetic focus by the billionaire, who channeled his resentment of regulatory oversight into a drastic overhaul of govt agencies.

The employees also warned that many of those enlisted by #ElonMusk to help him slash the size of the federal government under #Trump’s admin were political ideologues who did not have the necessary skills or experience for the task ahead of them.

The mass #resignation of #engineers, #DataScientists & #ProductManagers is a temporary setback for #Musk & the Republican president’s tech-driven #purge of the federal workforce.

WIRED · The Young, Inexperienced Engineers Aiding Elon Musk’s Government TakeoverBy Vittoria Elliott

#Hardware #Engineers of Fedi, do you have any suggestions on services I can buy custom PCBs with components pre mounted?

I want to get into hardware development but I don’t feel like learning how to solder right now and I don’t have an adequate space for that atm

All those jokes about #engineers walking into the woods never to return to technology may be grounded in truth.

The Washington Post · These are the most fulfilling jobs in AmericaBy Andrew Van Dam

The 19th Century #engineers, our forebears, overbuilt their products, because the #mathematical techniques, though already fully mature and accurate, were not as precise, due to the use of the #SlideRule. In the second half of the 20th Century, my generation of engineers did their best to exploit the powers of #computing to lengthen MTBF and to extend product lives.

In the 21st Century, though, engineering seems to have become obsessed with the use of #AI and other advanced computing technologies to predict accurately and precisely when products will fail, so as to aid the actuaries set the #warranties that expire just before the products fail.

#Engineering is a licensed profession with its own regulations and ethical codes. Unlike businessmen, we must not permit ourselves to kneel at the alter of profits.

Seeing the light in a familiar window might seem like a small joy, but it can feel like an immense one.

On 22 December, we honour the hard work of #Ukraine's power #engineers who make this possible.

Thank you for restoring what russia is trying to destroy and for bringing back the light to our homes and our lives.
