There is no shortage of startups and enterprises animated by, or outright proclaiming, replacing e-mail as the de-facto open internet messaging standard. VC Investors are forever fascinated by funding such endeavours. #matrix #simplex #slack etc are examples.

#deltachat endorses e-mail but reconfigures and repurposes it to serve for interoperable instant messaging. The #chatmail server network relays end to end encrypted e-mail only, and servers are reduced to dumb store-and-forward relays.

Hi all, the recurrent question of backing up (or not) #NeuroMethods slack is there again.
Lots of people are suggesting backing up the contents onto some #Google product, whether gmail or google docs. I know that gmail is not private (google analyses the contents of the mails) but is Google document private?
Otherwise is there an alternative to google docs that would actually be private? I imagine if it is private then it will not be free..

(Neuromethods is a discussion platform for when you have a problem or question about a #Neuroscience technique. It's on the free #Slack version so the history past 90 days is lost. See the previous time I have asked about this: neuromatch.social/@elduvelle/1)

Neuromatch SocialEl Duvelle (@elduvelle@neuromatch.social)The #NeuroMethods slack is an amazing resource for all #Neuroscience technical questions. However it’s using a free slack version so all older messages are hidden, and with new #Slack policies they’ll soon be deleted. One solution would be to find one or several “sponsors” who would help move the slack to a paid version. Any ideas or suggestions about this? @dangoodin I still miss the editable tags from #Flowdock. Slack is still not as good for typing and tagging (and thus grouping/finding) random thoughts and links.

Flowdock I think was even earlier than #Slack and for long superior in every way (threads long before Slack, and cleaner). But made it too difficult to get on the free tier and of course Slack got the attention for being American.

Have we become too dependent on American products? I find myself more hesitant to send money that way.

Mastodon thankfully not an issue. Phones we have recently discussed (including @jolla as an option, but tough one). What about a good alternative to Google Business stuff for small companies? Or something like #Notion? Or #Slack?
