The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (#NOAA) is the U.S. agency responsible for global weather #forecasting, #hurricane #prediction, #ocean #observation, and many other services vital to public safety. Its #satellites, #supercomputers, and research teams provide essential #data that help us understand our #planet and #protect #lives.

On February 27, the new U.S. administration initiated mass firings at NOAA. These actions are #unethical and deeply #disruptive to the talented #scientists and #engineers who dedicate themselves to the public good. The firings, along with expected budget cuts, have serious implications for the availability and #quality of #WeatherForecasts produced by the #UnitedStates. They must be reversed immediately.

Much of the data on this website is downloaded directly from NOAA's servers. In this environment of uncertainty, access could be #disrupted at any time. While I'll strive to keep all features on this website functional and switch to alternative data sources if necessary, some datasets have no substitute if they go offline.

What happens for the US government on the road to bankruptcy? How does that work exactly? The US is not a “typical household” so it stands to reason that going bankrupt means something very different. Musk keeps acting like it is a typical household, so I assume that’s not the answer (he seems to now be a nearly perfect negative indicator for reality).
In my limited understanding of economics, I’d expect that what happens first is we find the federal reserve effectively loses control of it’s ability to manage the currency. The interest on the debt creates a force that drives money expansion. Long before you go bankrupt, the currency devalues as inflation goes out of control.
Anybody have a good reference for a prediction of a future where spending stays crazy? (This has become a “squirrel!” moment for me- a missing piece of understanding that is going to distract me).

OK, prediction time : The commercial internet as we know it, which basically started with Amazon, ends within the next 5-10 years, tops.

Right now a lot of people think in crisis terms, like real-world crisis; the streets are flooded but we have to get by somehow. Soon, however, there'll be a surge of realization that the commercial internet is something we can just... leave. Do without. It was never more than merely convenient.
