Rockville Reflections

Rockville Regional Park is one of my regular hiking destinations near home.
The park has a range of trails from easy to difficult.
Near the end of summer this little pond can dry up into basically large mud puddle. I captured this on a beautiful spring day where the wind was completely absent. The pond reflected as almost a perfect mirror.

Frosty

This image was captured right after a decent snow storm came through Yosemite Valley.
This beautiful snow covered tree stood out against the muted evergreens behind them.
The snow was unbroken and presents a beautiful white carpet leading back to the tree.
The oak, with it's broad branches seemed to have captured more snow than those around it.

Good morning. 🌳🌳🌳

1 April 2025

I just returned from Moon Base Alpha this morning. This secret Space Force facility, located on the far side of the moon, was originally established by the German Luftwaffe in 1943 with extraterrestrial assistance. In 1945, the American Air Force covertly took control of the base. Renowned scientist and engineer Wernher von Braun played a crucial role by providing vital information that enabled the USAF to secure the base swiftly. With the creation of the Space Force as a new branch of the armed forces, management of the base naturally transitioned to them. The existence of Moon Base Alpha was recently disclosed to the public via The History Channel. Ah, and remember—on a day like this, not everything is as it seems. Happy April Fools'!

“Autumn Black Oak Trees” — Autumn black oak trees in a Yosemite Valley meadow.

When we think of fall colors, most often trees like maples or (in the West) aspens come to mind, not oak trees. But in the right light the black oaks of Yosemite Valley can put on quite an autumn color show. While the leaves tend more toward brown than yellow, when backlit they glow and the yellow tones predominate. I photographed these trees in soft backlight, and the color shift is clear…continues: gdanmitchell.com/2024/11/17/au

The Suffrage Oak on Kelvin Way in Glasgow. This tree was planted in 1918 by Louisa Lumsden on behalf of a number of organisations which campaigned for the right for women to be able to vote. It commemorates the passing of the Representation of the People Act of that year. Amongst other things, this act extended voting rights to women over the age of 30 who occupied property with a rateable value of £5 or more.

Anyone else have a favorite grove? This is one of mine.

A row of tall black oak trees in autumn colors, Yosemite Valley.

These trees, located in an iconic Yosemite Valley Meadow, call to almost photographer. They are interesting at almost any time of year — whether skeletal silhouettes in winter snow, brilliantly green in the spring, or brightly colorful in autumn light. This specific line of trees has always challenged me — one of those “this should be easy” scenes in which it can be difficult to find effective compositions...continues: gdanmitchell.com/2023/11/21/bl

📷 The Chained Oak, England

There is an old oak tree known as the Chained Oak that stands in the woods of northern England. Ancient, sturdy chains have been wrapped around the tree limbs. As well as being a beautiful tree in a stunning part of England, the tree plays a key role in an interesting piece of English folklore.
