Every once in a while, I encounter a Windows user, who is learning about Linux. And they hear the term "non-free" and think something cost money.

1st time Linux users, this does not mean they cost anything. Non-free or un-free is a generic term used to describe packages that may not be 100% open source or are open source, but have restricted licenses or whose developments for whatever reason could not be included in the ISO by default and were OPT-IN. Your media codecs are a good example of something that is non-free / unfree.

1/3 My "upgrade computers as they nearly die" strategy is upended by the #Microsoft October deadline for ending support for #Windows10.

I have three that are doing fine, at 12, 10, and 8 years old, for various people. They were specced to last, and they have, until a Microsoft decision to make them obsolete.

My newest fails the hardware requirement by one generation.

I can't afford to replace them, so what's left? Pay a ransom for updates, or go Linux (some of my apps are W only)?

Do NOT wait until the end of Windows 10 support to switch to Linux.

Why?

You want to make a well-informed choice, but also not be under pressure when you make your switch. A lot of people tend to wait at the last moment, rush into things, get frustrated, and then ultimately do not switch.

Making a change in life is always better when you have the free time to do so on your schedule.

Arch Linux has a little secret that the "old school" users, don't like to promote. -- A hidden GUI installer.

Burn the Arch Linux ISO to USB (or CD/DVD).
Boot from the USB (or CD/DVD).

When Arch starts, you'll see the terminal, but instead of going through the lengthy and complicated process outlined by Arch Wiki, type archinstall and press enter.

This GUI is text based, but very easy to navigate. Use arrow keys to navigate, and a mix of space and tab to select, with your enter key to confirm. You can move back and forth throughout the selection, undo changes, or just navigate around before making your choices. Nothing is final until you go all the way down to the "install" option, and even then it will ask you to confirm.

#Debian 12 Bookworm made installation and GUI much easier than previous versions, including nonfree repositories for proprietary driver support! Debian 13 Trixie (stable) drops later this year. It is upstream and all about open source, as a Linux option.
