Digital security will eventually reach a point where we will need exploding passwords. Every service, every account protected by a password will need a secondary exploding password. Once the username and password are entered, the system will recognize the explosion one, and promptly dump all the data, and overwrite it with zeroes. So, if you are tortured for your password, you can give the exploding one. #infotech #infosec

Someday someone will write computer instructions so that when the user claims that a unwanted email is spam, that it, and wait for this, because it’s totally a novelty in this universe, actually fucking works. We don’t live in that universe and this is the most intractable problem in all of Computer Science. We’re talking 30k years past quantum holographic overlays. It’s totally impossible. Spam is such a mess, a part of me kicks around the notion of explicit whitelist as a potential solution. Maybe using + in the addressing part. So, username+1@provider.com for example. Just assign a number to every person you hand it out to, and then create a rule that any inbound without a + character goes to spam, and when spam shows up with numbers, you know who sold your address, and you can burn them with another rule. #email #spam #ShowerThought #today #infotech

So many things follow this path. VMWare, iPhone, Mac OS X, Windows… the list can just keep on going, but these are the ones that immediately spring to mind. I remember when I was so excited by iPhone. Now, I spend more of the time fantasizing about accidentally dropping the hated thing into an industrial shredder. We’ve been kicking around how to address executive spoofing at work. I thought I would just go with the biggest and baddest solution I know of, and that is a TOTP shared secret that rotates every 30s. I found a website, stefansundin.github.io/2fa-qr/ that lets you type in all the settings and get a handy QR code to make this all work. The apps that use these are ones like Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator, and 1Password just to start. #infosec #today #infotech
