For the second year in a row, the whaling season has not taken place in Iceland, and there is every likelihood this abhorrent practice may be consigned to the past.

Strangely, here is one of the reasons as to why it no longer happens.

#Iceland’s second largest #whaling company, IP-Utgerd, ceased operations in 2020, citing declining profits and demand for whale meat facilitated by the #COVID-19 pandemic

Some good news and some bad news from #Iceland.

Hvalur hf. - the only company licensed for this barbaric "hunting" - has cancelled this year’s #whaling season.

Fortunately, market changes mean that exporting the "product" is no longer economically viable.
Unfortunately, the bad news is that this means nearly 200 local people are out of work. Let's hope that they find better permanent employment before the 2026 butchery begins.

Here's a dataset about #whaling with some variables I don't understand (neither do the students using it for an intro #statistics project). If you have any insight into what these variables/terms mean, will you share that?

  • Number of whales struck (does this mean "harpooned," maybe?)
  • Number of whales tried out (no idea)

The whaling season is cancelled for second consecutive year in Iceland.

Iceland's largest whaling company – Hvalur hf. – will not be hunting this season. This marks the second consecutive year that the company has opted out of whaling during the summer season.

The controversial practice of ‘whaling’, hunting and killing whales to extract and sell their meat is currently only permitted in Iceland, Norway and Japan.

American-Canadian environmental activist Paul Watson, a leading figure in the defense of whales, is now free to travel abroad after Interpol suspended his arrest request from Japan, the NGO Sea Shepherd France announced Tuesday. Speaking on FRANCE 24, Paul Watson says that Interpol has been weaponized by many countries to go after whistleblowers, activists and dissidents.

Days after Watson’s arrest, the same #whaling fleet slaughtered an #endangered #FinWhale- the first of its #species to be killed in 50 years.

14 years later on July 21st, 2024, #PaulWatson was apprehended in #Nuuk, #Greenland when his ship stopped to refuel. While #Japan struggles to construct #evidence, #Watson is still imprisoned, with his court date being pushed back again and again. His latest court date is December 2nd- his 74th birthday.
