Continued thread

As we can see in this video 👆, these patterns are mostly handled by women. I've observed it myself when living in a Huni Kuin community in 2023.

However, the community where I was didn't bake their own ceramic. So it's fascinating to see how they do it in this documentary.

Anyway, this is great news that the cultural heritage of the Huni Kuin peoples is finally recognised officially 🥇

Updates from London Pattern Club

Hello! I’m James, and I organise events for London Pattern Club. We have a few events coming up next week, so I thought I’d take the opportunity to update you on our activities.

Craft Group & Socials at The Peckham Pelican

After the popularity of our craft groups at The Glitch, we’ve found a bigger location at The Peckham Pelican. From March to June, our events will take place on the fourth Wednesday of the month from 7-9PM. These events are intended to offer a space for people involved in algorithmic creative practices to connect and collaborate, and for newcomers to discover algorithmic crafts.

You can find details for our upcoming events and RSVP via our lu.ma page.

London Pattern Club in Softissues

An article I wrote about London Pattern Club will be appearing in Softissues, a new publication from the creative studio holobiont. The article reflects on the group’s origins, my motivations for starting it, and our journey so far, and it features some great photos of our craft group taken by Ava Majumdar. I’m very excited to read all the other contributions, which consider counter-narratives to the idea of ‘softness’.

There’s a free launch party for the publication taking place at The Ivy House, Nunhead, on March 25th from 6PM. There’ll be readings, performances, live visuals and a DJ set, and copies of the publication will be available for purchase on a sliding scale.

Open Call for Artwork

We recently organised an open call for artists to contribute designs for our flyers and promotional materials. That open call has now ended, and we’re pleased to announce that we’ve selected designs by V Buckenham and Rianna Suen (below).

Design by Rianna Suen.Design by V Buckenham (using Select Mono Italic by Michael McMaster).

We’ll be offering each artist our time, materials and assistance to create up to 10 A3 silkscreen prints of their artwork at South London Makerspace in May 2025.

And that’s all for now! As always, if you’d like to get involved in organising Pattern Club, or you have an idea for a fun workshop or activity, please reach out to us via our Discord server.
