I've just released !EliteNet, my first #RISCOS application in 30 years.

It allows #Archimedes #Elite to transmit to an #Econet multiplayer scoreboard (see Yoda’s score in the second screenshot, for example).

I’ve loved every minute of this little side project!

Here's the repo: github.com/markmoxon/elite-ove

If you want to see this in action, we’ll be playing multiplayer Elite at the National Museum of Computing’s LAN Party on 7-8 June.

You can find more information about the party here, including ticket details: tnmoc.org/events/econet-lan-pa

See you there!

#Trump vs. #Science
American research thrived under a patronage system that funnels congressionally approved dollars to #universities, #nationallabs and institutes. Knowledge factory employs tens of thousands of researchers, draws talent from around world and generates scientific breakthroughs and #NobelPrizes.
#Facts are #elite, facts are fungible, facts are false. And once nothing is true, anything can be true.
Now some American scientists are looking for the exits.

Aha! Found it! I'd been looking for this. Recommended once by YouTube, and then lost.

Paint.App
… on GEM
… on DR-DOS
… on an 8086 PC emulator
… on a Raspberry Pi
… running as a second processor using a BBC Master 128 for I/O.

There's a follow-up re-hash video by @WiFiSheep that explains the tokenization problem with the CIRCLE statement.

Of the many people who have run #Elite on a Pi second processor, none seem to have thought about switching to the PDP-11 emulation and trying to run some early Unix. But seeing DR-DOS on a BBC Master is pretty wild.

#Quakers condemn arrests of #activists at meeting house

March 30, 2025

"The arrests of six female supporters of activist group #YouthDemand at a Quaker meeting house have been condemned by the faith group.

"Quakers in #Britain said the arrests were the first at a meeting house and 'an aggressive violation'.

"The Metropolitan Police said six people were arrested on Thursday evening at the Westminster Meeting House on suspicion of conspiracy to cause a #PublicNuisance.

"The force said it came amid concerns there were plans to 'shut down' London during April using tactics such as road blocks.

"Youth Demand said more than 30 officers were involved with making the arrests.

"Paul Parker, of Quakers in Britain, said he could not recall anyone being arrested at a Quaker meeting house in living memory.

"'The forceful removal of young people holding a protest group meeting clearly shows what happens when a society #CriminalisesProtest.

"'#FreedomOfSpeech, assembly, and fair trials are an essential part of free public debate which underpins #democracy,' he said.

"Police said a further five arrests for the same offence were made on Friday - four at addresses in #London and one in #Exeter.

"Youth Demand, which is not affiliated with the Quakers, said the meeting was 'an opportunity to share plans for non-violent #CivilResistance actions' due to take place in April.

"The group claimed a number of houses were also raided on Thursday and Friday as part of the operation.

"Quakers in Britain said: 'Quakers support the right to non-violent public protest, acting themselves from a deep moral imperative to stand up against #injustice and for our planet.

"'Many have taken non-violent direct action over the centuries from the abolition of #slavery to women's #suffrage and prison reform.'

"The Met said the force understood the importance of the right to protest but added that Youth Demand had stated an intention to 'shut down' London in April.

"'We have a responsibility to intervene to prevent activity that crosses the line from protest into serious disruption and other criminality,' a spokesman said.

"On Thursday, officers raided a Youth Demand planning meeting where those in attendance were plotting their April action.

"Six people were arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to cause a public nuisance.

"A further five arrests for the same offence were made on Friday, 28 March. Four of the arrests were at addresses in London and one in Exeter.

'Policing priorities'

"Out of the 11 people arrested, 10 have been released on bail and one will face no further action.

"Asked about the matter on Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg, Home Secretary Yvette Cooper said: 'I have made clear to the police this government's priorities for policing are reducing serious violence... and bringing back neighbourhood policing, those crimes in town centres like shoplifting.'

"Youth Demand, which describes itself as a 'new youth resistance campaign fighting for an end to #genocide', began carrying out acts of #CivilDisobedience last year.

"Its demands of the government include stopping all trade with #Israel and raising money from 'the #SuperRich and #Fossilfuel #elite' to pay damages for the effects of fossil fuel burning."

In anticipation of June's Econet LAN Party at the National Museum of Computing in Bletchley, I've updated Elite over Econet.

It now supports flicker-free graphics, up to 100 players in multiplayer, better server support and more. Game on!

What's happening in the #US government right now seems like they're "#fuzzing #democracy", that is overwhelming the system and the opposition in order to install autocracy.

The primary problem IMHO being that the #constitution is still written in an antiquated form of #English which allows an #elite class of specialized #lawyers to interpret laws, and therefore be gatekeepers of law.

This is what idolization of documents gets you. At the very least update the phrasing to be more clear.

#ForcedSterilization of #DisabledPeople Isn’t a Relic of the Past

In a majority of states, #eugenics-era laws still let doctors sterilize disabled patients against their will.

by Julia Métraux
February 27, 2025

"'In order to prevent our being swamped with incompetence,' Supreme Court Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes wrote for the majority in 1927’s Buck v. Bell, the state could—and should—'prevent those who are manifestly unfit from continuing their kind.' Forced sterilization, the court held, was not only legal but laudable.

"In 1924, 17-year-old Carrie Buck was institutionalized, having been deemed 'feebleminded' on the grounds of 'promiscuous' behavior. In reality, Buck was raped by her foster family’s nephew. Three years later, with the Court’s blessing, Virginia’s 'State Colony of Epileptics and Feeble Minded' sterilized Buck against her will. The decision, passed at the height of the 20th-century eugenics movement, has never been overturned.

"'There’s a very different standard being applied to disabled people’s autonomy.'

"To this day, 31 states and #WashingtonDC, still have laws on the books that allow for the practice—and just two, #Alaska and #NorthCarolina, have laws that fully ban the #nonconsensual #sterilization of disabled people, according to a 2022 report from the National Women’s Law Center. There’s no official account of just how many disabled people have been sterilized under those laws.

"Some of these laws aren’t even that old. In 2019, #Iowa and #Nevada passed new forced sterilization laws that applied to people under #guardianship. Both bills passed unanimously, and the end result is consistent with laws on the books in other states. There was no discourse among politicians—let alone objections—about the ethics of sterilizing disabled people without their consent.

"Sterilization and Social Justice Lab co-director and founder Alexandra Minna Stern said that early IQ tests, which sought to measure intelligence in part on the basis of class- and culture-based questions involving Beethoven’s sonatas, the early United States, and college athletics, were 'used to categorize people who would then be targeted for sterilization,' generally those who were '#marginalized or maligned in some way': in #California and the #Southwest, often #MexicanAmericans; nationwide, #Black, #Indigenous and #poorer white Americans, particularly women. The people behind the tests, Stern says, were 'white, #elite men who wanted to create a certain type of society in their own image.'

"NWLC senior counsel for health equity and justice Ma’ayan Anafi, who is also disabled, told Mother Jones that “forced sterilization laws are a really powerful example of how violations of disabled people’s bodies and rights are baked into our legal system today.”

I bought myself the #DuelSenseEdge wireless controller for the #PS5, I figure, if the #Elite controller for the Xbox is good enough for me to use without hurting my hands, the edge should be the same via the PS5, which is good since I have rarely used my Ps5 over the past few months because it hurts too much to play and the DPad sucks for inputting commands especially for games like #MK1 where it always fails.
