How Australia is Challenging China’s Rare Earth Monopoly

Look, if you’re not paying attention to the rare earths saga, I get it—sounds like some niche geology nerd fight. But trust me, this is the kind of shadow war that’s gonna ripple into your phone, your car, maybe even your next hospital visit. Australia’s squaring up against China in a high-stakes brawl over these obscure minerals that power, well, pretty much everything techy. And it’s not just about rocks. It’s about who gets to call the shots in a world that’s addicted to […]

Africa doesn’t need aid. It needs control over its #CriticalMinerals

"It’s time for #Africa to transform from the world’s raw materials store into its manufacturing powerhouse. By turning our mineral wealth into lasting prosperity, we can make foreign aid what it should have been all along: unnecessary."

Do Indigenous Australians get good deals from mining companies that extract rare earth minerals on their lands?

As Professor Park explains, we don't really know because of a lack of transparency. "Co-benefit" agreements are opaque.

“You want high-efficiency motors in your EVs and offshore wind turbines? You want night-vision goggles, sonar systems, or magnetostrictive actuators? You’re going to need terbium. Like dysprosium, terbium comes almost exclusively from Chinese soil, processed in Chinese facilities, and licensed by Chinese bureaucrats with a nuanced appreciation for geopolitical leverage. There’s no viable substitute … “

“No dysprosium, no thermal stability. No thermal stability, no functioning motor in your F-35 or your Mustang Mach-E. China controls essentially the entire supply of dysprosium, and no, there is no magical mine in Wyoming or Quebec waiting in the wings. If dysprosium doesn’t come out of China, it doesn’t come out at all. It’s the spinal cord of electrification, and right now China’s holding the vertebrae.”

🚨 Ontario announced it will shutdown exports of nickel to the US in response to tariffs 🚨

“I will shutdown deliveries of Nickel going into the US. It will shutdown manufacturing.”

“Plants will close down within a week… assembly plants in Michigan, which is a red state”

Hallo! An #introduction - I’m Sabrina, a #PublicPolicy student from the US working on #CriticalMinerals and the #EnergyTransition. Here to meet interesting people and also hopefully practice my German (enrolled in B2). I’m a #writer and do #photography and enjoy #hiking. Interested in achieving #NetZero and helping the world prevent severe #ClimateChange. I also like coffee and exploring new places. Same username over on mastodon dot social.

Hi all, an #introduction post! I’m in #Germany, from the US, studying #PublicPolicy and interested in #RenewableEnergy and the #EnergyTransition (esp. #CriticalMinerals). Hoping to meet interesting people here…und mein Deutsch zu verbessern (ich habe fast B2).
I am a #writer (esp. #ScienceWriting but also a #novelist) and do #photography and #archery. #Harvard class of something (I am not old but…let’s not say how long ago this was). Big fan of coffee.

I'm going to start a thread about the #MineralsSecurityPartnership — a joint venture between US, UK, EU, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Estonia, India, Italy, Japan, Korea, and most recently Argentina — with the ostensible aim “to ensure that #CriticalMinerals are produced, processed, and recycled in a manner that supports the ability of countries to realize the full economic development benefit of their geological endowments."

A threat to biodiversity from mineral extraction

"Mineral extraction threatens vertebrate species populations across the tropics. Wildlife is more sensitive to mining in some regions of the world than in others, and our report can inform choices of where to prioritize getting our minerals to cause the least damage to biodiversity. Future policy should also focus on creating more circular economies—increasing recycling and reuse of materials, rather than just extracting more."

No position!!!! Jeez! "This is unsettled, unceded traditional territory. The Yellowknives Dene are a sovereign #FirstNation and now you have foreign ownership over soil and minerals that are well within the rights of the YKDFN." Yep! And then there's the Canada-China FIPA playing out in the background. The GNWT really is a provisional govt. cabinradio.ca/164941/news/poli
