This is quite an old photo from a trip to Canada, visiting an old friend from my time studying abroad. It took a bit of convincing to get him out into the icy cold that morning — but with the faint glow of sunrise in the distance and the mist rolling off the falls in the foreground, it turned out to be one of my favorite shots. (Not sure my friend would say the same, though)

Driving in the mountain wonderland

Yeah, mountains are part of driving longer stretches in Norway. You can take the long road following the coastline or cross over the mountains.
In late winter, in April and with good weather, the mountains are fastest. And prettiest.
Of course, snow removal when the snow layer is 2 meters thick or more means you must stop your car and climb up to get a view of the mountains. Or have a look down at the main road on the right here.
You do not stay there long. When the base temperature is minus 22 degrees Centigrade, any windy breeze makes the real temperature even colder.
The heaters in the cars sold here is made to handle it. I remember one time my first car, a Datsun, had a car heater that nearly did not. It was December, and minus 34 degrees outside.
Going outside when it is that cold, every nerve in your skin and breathing system cries out: "Seriously?" "This is not real!" "Get inside, you maniac" "Cold. So cold. Freezing cold. Unbelievable cold!"
Hot food and coffee never taste better than after a walk in the cold. Even a short one.
But it is worth visit Norwegian mountains under snow.

A very small study (10 individuals) found that 7 days of 1-hour ice baths was associated with lower programmed cell death (apoptosis) and greater cleanup of cellular waste (autophagy).

About usCold plunges actually change your cells, uOttawa study finds | About usA new study conducted at the Human and Environmental Physiology Research lab (HEPRU) at the University of Ottawa has unveiled significant findings on the effects of cold water acclimation on autophagic (the cells’ recycling system, which promotes cellular health) and apoptotic (the programmed cell death that gets rid of damaged cells) responses in young males. The research highlights the potential for cold exposure to enhance cellular resilience against stress. The study, conducted by Kelli King, postdoctoral fellow, and Glen Kenny, Full Professor at uOttawa’s School of Human Kinetics and Director of HEPRU, involved ten healthy young males who underwent cold-water immersion at 14°C (57.2°F) for one hour across seven consecutive days. Blood samples were collected to analyze the participants' cellular responses before and after the acclimation period.“Our findings indicate that repeated cold exposure significantly improves autophagic function, a critical cellular protective mechanism,” says Professor Kenny. “This enhancement allows cells to better manage stress and could have important implications for health and longevity.”

After a horrendous couple of months at work I finally have a day off. Have been looking forward to it all week, planning the perfect day-long hike, getting excited about starting another thru hike I can do in stages. Unfortunately yesterday I got a sore throat and today it has developed into a nasty cold so instead I will be forced to spend today in bed and on the couch. I’m very grumpy right now.

3:00 am. Nobody is around to pick you up and drop you home. There is only one very dimly lit path that can take you there. The mist makes the icy air damp and makes it harder to see what is ahead of you. Is that a person on the path? No, it must be like a sign or something, right? What if it is a person? You need to get home - but will you be going there alone? Will you be going there at all?

The majestic Perito Moreno Glacier extends into Argentino Lake, surrounded by rugged snow-capped mountains and endless forests and trees. It is a combination of a harsh, cold environment softened by a cluster of flowering trees in the foreground.

Apparently steel gets brittle from cold at much higher temperatures than I previously thought. It was maybe -12°C when I broke several bits (from different sets/makes) in a row before giving up. Some of these had driven hundreds of screws before, so they weren't made of cheese.

Ants Pants mentioned this in a video and I didn't believe it because I thought cold embrittlement wasn't a thing until -70°C or thereabouts. 🤷
