I found a dead spotted lantern fly when sweeping my screen porch yesterday. I'm guessing it got here in or on the folding lawn chair we moved here from my daughter's house in Philadelphia. The last I remember hearing about these invading bugs was they they were still well north of Baltimore, while I live about an hour south of Baltimore. #SpottedLanternFly

Ok yes this is it, another lady sitting on these benches said she saw and killed another one just before this, and I saw the red spotted wings when she smashed this guy (I don't have anything smashy in my bag and these stupid planters only have fake plastic "rocks" in them!)

-- ayo #WashingtonDC we have a #SpottedLanternfly hangout spot in the planters along the bricked pedestrian plaza across K Street from the Carnegie Library (also it's weak that the USDA which has wanted posters up for this jerk bug isn't on Mastodon)

New on Entomology Today: Producing offspring from multiple fathers can add much-needed genetic diversity to populations of invasive insects, which often arise from a small number of individuals. New research confirms such multiple paternity occurs in spotted lanternflies, though to what degree it aids their spread needs further study. #entomology #insects #SpottedLanternfly entomologytoday.org/2023/09/13

For #SciArtSeptember day 2: battle, it’s my linocut of 2 dangerous invasive beauties & the battle against their spread in eastern North America, the spotted lanternfly & tree of heaven. The Tree of Heaven (Ailanthus altimissa) is a deciduous tree native to NE China & Taiwan, which was foolishly brought to Europe & NA in the 1700s where it as become known as a noxious weed & invasive plant. 🧵1/n

Fourth-instar nymph of a spotted lanternfly (Lycorma delicatula). I'm in PA, the epicenter of their North American invasion, but they have spread to DE, CT, MD, MA, MI, IN, NJ, NY, NC, OH, RI, VA, and WV, with sightings of dead adults, perhaps from shipped products, in CA, CO, FL, NH, TN, UT, and VT. At least they are very easy to spot. #hemiptera #fulgoridae #invasive #insect #entomology #SpottedLanternfly #nature #IntroducedSpecies
