Detail from tethered by fluid & ligaments (2023). A red & purple organza liver basted onto grey linen. The biliary system with all its branches between the two layers of organza is filled with bilious green. There are small yellow beads on the biliary system inside & white beads on top of the smaller lobe. An arched T shape with tight crisscrossing stitches in thick off-white thread separates the large & small lobes and curves over the top. There are blocks of text stitched in light grey single strand thread around the image. Some of them are cut off in this photo. They read: roots grow in us. through our landscapes. plexuses. fleshy beasts tethered. By fluid and ligaments. Such a gentle embrace. Beneath our skin. Here is the thing. Laid open. The spells it. A language. Between. this golden ingot. This tailed beast. And its viscous song. What a miracle these spaces. Are what make us whole.

Sensorium (2016)

In the centre of some bone white linen, there is a spine embroidery in thick satin stitch. Emanating from the spine are thick burgundy lines in an undulant oval shape. This oval is bisected across the middle. In the top half, there is a section outlined in burgundy filled with coiling blue lines and a similar section in the bottom half. The rest of the undulant oval is filled with fine coiling burgundy lines. The spine is very straight, the rest of the embroidery is very coiled and busy. Lia’s initials are stitched in fine thread the same colour as the cloth at the bottom right.

Paresthesia (tongue 2) 2018

An embroidery on black linen. There is the outline of an open mouth with the tongue sticking out. The lips are outlined in dark pink, the tongue in paler pink, & the teeth in bone white. There are sections outlined on the tongue in thick blue lines. The tip & sides of the tongue are covered in tiny red, orange & white dots. In the center there is an hourglass shape of tiny pink dots. There are taut lines of thin dark blue thread stretched from the tip of the tongue to the sides, from the sides of the tongue to the lips & palate, & from the palate to the tip of the tongue.

Spring mitosis sampler (2024)

Two reproductive cells dividing embroidered on white linen. The edges of the dividing cells and the nucleus membranes are in bluish mossy green split stitch. the cell membrane is in light green stem stitch. The corona radiata is pastel pink zig zag chain stitch. The nucleolus of each cell is in pastel pink bullion stitch. The polar bodies are in mauve single strand back stitch. The cytoplasm is in variegated pink to green thread in seed stitch and French knots. Lia’s initials are stitched in white whipped back stitch.

Happy birthday to Canadian geneticist Irene Ayako Uchida (1917-2013)! In my #linocut Uchida is shown surrounded by chromosones, with anomalies (shown with pink arrows) due to radiation exposure, based on one of her research papers. A strand of DNA is hidden in the image (as her watchband).⁠

My beaver lino block print is hand printed on delicate, translucent, handmade Japanese paper with a deckle edge. This is a North American beaver (Castor canadensis), symbol of Canada.

April 7 is International Beaver Day. While a species of “least concern” according to the IUCN Red List of mammals, numbers of North American beavers have been literally decimated since colonization. 1/2

This tree swallow sketch pushed me to balance detail and blur and a few different levels. Used Pentel .2mm, .3mm, .5mm, and a new .9mm with 2B and 4B leads to nail the textures. Tree swallows are insect-eating acrobats–feeding mid-air like pros! #birds #artyear #sciart

As described this a detail of my pollinator garden piece made of collaged prints, for Manufactured Ecosystems. Working on a new print about the future of pollination featuring wild native bees for Manufactured Ecosystems.

The future of pollination is a huge global concept to tackle artistically. There are issues worldwide, but they’re all local: specific species, stresses on ecosystems & remedies. You can proscribe a general policy like ‘restore habitat’ but you have to be clear that the best plants to help pollinators are those that evolved in a given place.

As described this is a large 16” x 20” linocut print on white paper with a deckle edge with a ring of 8 wild bees with one in the centre, printed in black ink. The bees are the two bumblebees (Bombus impatiens and B. affinis), a sweat bee (Agapostemon sericeus), two leaf cutter bees (Megachile relativa and M. brevis), two mason bees (Osmia lignaria and O. conjunta), a carpenter bee (Xylocopa virginica), a long-horned bee (Melissodes).
