"Anxious to know what the Japanese text of [Masahiro] Sakurai’s tweet, ほうほう, means, many took to using automatic online translation tools, which in many cases gave them a translation that raised as many questions as it answered when they spat back 'method' as the translation. Now instead of trying to figure out what ほうほう means, many were trying to figure out what 'method' was supposed to mean."
Sora News 24: Smash Bros. creator learns he can’t tweet carelessly, fans learn they can’t trust AI translations. “Anxious to know what the Japanese text of [Masahiro] Sakurai’s tweet, ほうほう, means, many took to using automatic online translation tools, which in many cases gave them a translation that raised as many questions as it answered when they spat back ‘method’ as the […]
The Akihabara branch of the At Home maid cafe chain is piloting the use of Pixie Dust's Vuevo Display, which translates between about 100 languages in real time. The trial runs from 29 Jan until the end of March (just in time for the lunar new year and the expected increase in tourists, mostly Chinese, that are less likely to speak either Japanese or English).
Automatische Übersetzung von Benutzeroberflächen sind schlecht. Sehr schlecht. Ich entdecke immer wieder absolut gruselige Übersetzungen, an denen man sofort erkennen kann, dass die Übersetzung maschinell und ohne Review erfolgt ist.
Beispiel heute: Outlook für Mac, der Terminassistent:
Was Outlook mit "Über 1 Stunde" meint ist nicht, dass der Termin mehr als eine Stunde, sondern knapp eine Stunde dauert. Im Englischen steht dort vermutlich "about 1 hour".

Today, information flows from a user to some #gatekeeper who uses our data to profit from its use. Sure, in return, we have access to some neat-o products and cool entertainment, and some things have been truly useful, e.g., #MachineTranslation has improved immensely from access to enormous amounts of data, but it's still just a two-dimensional vector field. 13/16
Bombenpanik im Zug nach Oberkotzau (Landkreis Hof) durch KI-verstärkte fremdsprachliche Inkompetenz (und Rassismus mag auch eine Rolle gespielt haben).

Natto Team warns that many cybersecurity reports on cybercriminals rely on machine translations where slang gets lost in translation, or missing context such as dates . There’s a particular emphasis on Russian language criminals, as Natto highlights Trellix reporting on the Conti ransomware group (the notorious 2022 Conti Leaks), showing how dates and re-examination of original language text provides a different interpretation of dialogues. https://nattothoughts.substack.com/p/too-many-toads-lost-in-translation

@stephanie whilst #machinetranslation is often problematic, still the crucial thing is that without it we would have very much less…. Poor translation is perhaps better than none
I have to admit, I'm afraid of Docker. Is there an easier way of running #LibreTranslate? Maybe some instance with a limited free API service? I wanted to try some #MachineTranslation on my open markdown teaching materials repo :/
Update: for a few dozen documents I think I'll try https://libretranslate.eownerdead.dedyn.io/
How would commercial translation and transcription models perform when faced with genuine news content, exacting journalists and the pressing demands of a newsroom? We devised a quality assessment to help BBC journalists decide.

Out of curiosity as #exam season will start soon: We currently have a rule that students can use #AI tools. Without acknowledging so when used for grammar, style, spelling, etc. But they have to mention what, when, and how they did if they use it for generating ideas, data, whole paragraphs, etc.
Surprisingly, we *don't* have regulations for #MachineTranslation (MT) tools. For sit-in exams students are allowed paper dictionaries (!) and that's it.
