Spent many hours in the garden today, weeding my strawberry patch, planting onions sets and watering my garlic. Every time I go to work on my veggie patch, I discover a new reason why I love gardening. Today I was reflecting on how growing plants requires me to be radically hopeful and to trust that there will be a tomorrow, one that I care about and one I want to make better. At the same time, gardening teaches resilience and humility. Not everything will work out, not every seed will sprout. But then we gardeners don't just quit - we and our plants just try again next year 🌱

It's a mix of total commitment and unconditional love - but also the ability to let go, to not become overly attached and accept that you can't control everything.

I posted a blog about imagining the futures we want (and need) in order to create them. Plus, the story behind my #solarpunk Threads stories, which are set in the future I desire.

#Hope (the radical kind) you'll take a look!

The blog includes some fun tidbits and a bonus at the end.

I mention @sarenaulibarri @susankayequinn and the 2016 workshop I offered with Starhawk.

“The optimists among us
taking heart because it is spring
skip along
attending their meetings
signing their e-mail petitions
marching with their satiric signs
singing their we shall overcome songs
posting their pungent twitters and blogs
believing in a better world
for no good reason
I envy them
said the old woman…”

A close friend, so close, was sure, so sure, that Kamala was going to win. Practical implications of Kamala being VP to a genocide just didn't register.

They may have been blinded by #Hope.

People go on, and on, about hope. It's not essential, has huge dangers and may seem so important as our culture had for the longest time a sure and certain hope in the Resurrection.

What if we had sure doubts and certain ambivalences?

Would my close friend have bet a grand on Kamala?

Remember those weeks of the COVID shutdown when we all went home & waved at our neighbors from afar & kids drove by honking birthday wishes to other isolated schoolmates & we went out for walks and viewed murals & messages of #hope drawn in colored chalk by neighborhood kids & families would stand outside the picture window to visit grandma & neighbors would turn up the music to dance socially-distanced on the sidewalk & death, being so close at hand, made us briefly #humble & #appreciative?

❤️

The Hands Off protests yesterday, which were (let's not mince the truth here) antifascist and pro-democracy rallies, have lifted my spirits in a way that has made me feel that we actually have more options available than we realize. And not just on the political front, but also on the personal front. We must not get in the habit of being doormats to this regime. Or, for that matter, to the subtly sinister parasites in life.

Exactly all of this 🥰 I can't stress enough how not in the slightest joking I am when I say that I believe the world would be a better place if people exposing themselves to the many pessimistic, if not outright nihilistic shows permeating entertainment in the past few decades had been watching Doctor Who instead...

Try to be nice but always be kind 💛

Artists of all kinds are part of the #resistance. There's a reason he's trying to take over the arts.

I think this should be the anthem of our times. youtube.com/watch?v=b0bmhcvPwT

"I will not hate, and I will not fear. In our darkest hour, #hope lingers here."

"My country, when justice is gone, in our darkest hour, #hope lingers here."

This is everything they are afraid of -- hope, refusal to hate, and joyful singing.

Let freedom, and hope, ring!
