Good morning. 🍁🍁🍁

21 March 2025

Are you ever in a bad mood for now reason at all? I think it happens to all of us. When it happens to me, I usually just get quiet and mope around, but when I'm like that is not a good time to accidently bump into me.

My mother made me a Dammit Doll—a simple creation crafted from a couple of pieces of cloth, stuffed and sewn together, with buttons for eyes, yarn for hair, and a ribbon with a bell attached. A 3x5 card is tied to the ribbon, featuring these words:

"When you feel you want to throw the phone or kick the desk and shout. Here's a little dammit doll you cannot do without. Just grab it by its legs and find a place to slam it. And as you whack the stuffing out. Yell dammit, dammit, dammit."

"When angry, count to four; when very angry, swear." - Mark Twain

"Do not meddle in the affairs of Wizards, for they are subtle and quick to anger." - J. R. R. Tolkien

I'm trying a new thing where I put my earplugs in as soon as I start to become irritated.

On really irritable days I might, finally, end up noticing how much the background noise is bothering me after awhile; other times it never occurs to me at all and I'd go so far as to say that I believe that it isn’t even a factor. But. If I put them in as soon as I'm starting to feel angry, it helps a lot whether I readily think it will or not.

Both our baby kittens are sick and my life is pretty upside down right now, to say the least.

Vet visits, vet tests, midterm tomorrow, specialists doctors, medical tests, bloodwork, insurance approval hurdles for my new biologic … I’m exhausted.

“It’s ok that you’re not okay.”

I think it’s time to read the book with that title written by Megan Devine…

I don't think #SamKerr is going to win this one. I suspect what she said, she said in #fear and #anger but you can't codify the #law to allow for that.

Even as no lawyer that much is obvious. Every law must apply to everyone or there will be so much resentment the law will be unenforceable.

In the same way as a woman who makes a sexist joke, she will have to pay for it.

Rethinking the narrative of progress - ‘doing loss’ in present society

How can Western modernity come to grips with loss if its promise of progress has been stripped of its credibility? Andreas Reckwitz, 2023:

"The losses — both those already experienced and those anticipated in the future — can no longer be rendered invisible so easily; they are growing in numbers, and the attention paid to them is growing, too."

"In late modernity, we thus see both an escalation of loss and a growing awareness of loss: from climate change to the losers of modernization, from collective traumata to regressions... the present-day political field turns out to be an explosive experimental space for dealing with negative events."

"The promise is no longer about progress but about the illusion of regaining what has been lost:
To face the truth with open eyes and make loss, the experienced and the anticipated a legitimate and crucial topic of debate does not necessarily weaken democracy but could strengthen it."

In a multi-year career of producing articles which often involved taking the pi*s out of the most divisive, topical, political subjects, this remains, by some distance, the most 'controversial' thing I ever wrote for the Guardian (in terms of public reaction)

#MichaelMoore telling it like it is:

Here’s a sad statistic for you: In the #UnitedStates, we have a whopping 1.4 million people employed with the job of DENYING #HEALTHCARE, vs only 1 million #doctors in the entire #country! That’s all you need to know about #America. We pay more people to deny care than to give it. 1 million doctors to give care, 1.4 million brutes in cubicles doing their best to stop doctors from giving that care. If the purpose of “health care” is to keep people alive, then what is the purpose of DENYING PEOPLE HEALTH CARE? Other than to kill them? I definitely condemn that kind of murder. And in fact, I already did. In 2007, I made a #film#SICKO – about America’s bloodthirsty, profit-driven and murderous health insurance system. It was nominated for an Oscar. It’s the second-largest grossing film of my career (after Fahrenheit 9/11). And over the past 15 years, millions upon millions of people have watched it including, apparently, #LuigiMangione.

After the
#killing of the #CEO of #UnitedHealthCare, the largest of these billion dollar insurance companies, there was an immediate OUTPOURING of anger toward the #HealthInsurance industry. Some people have stepped forward to condemn this #anger.

I am not one of them.
