Hel (Old Norse Hel, “Hidden”) is a giantess and/or goddess who rules over the identically-named Hel, the underworld where many of the dead dwell. Her name’s meaning of “Hidden” surely has to do with the underworld and the dead being “hidden” or buried beneath the ground.
According to the thirteenth-century Icelandic scholar Snorri Sturluson, Hel is the daughter of Loki and the giantess Angrboda (Old Norse Angrboða, “Anguish-boding”), and therefore the sister of the wolf Fenrir and the world serpent, Jormungand. This makes her part of a highly dangerous and disreputable family.

Do you remember that #medieval / #viking hood I wanted to sew a few weeks ago? Not only did I actually finish it just on time for the first medieval market 2 weeks ago (well in the train on the way there) I also managed to finally take some pictures. The sewing as well as the embroidery could be neater, but I like it #handsewing

Our very first visit to Norway found us in Bergen on a day that started off rainy but did brighten up as the day wore on. We had no plans during our 2013 visit other than to walk around and see what caught our eyes, and ended up buying jewellery, some more typical souvenirs, and having a beer outside somewhere. Not great beer, but nice to try the local stuff anyway.

Lots of little dragon heads: This tablet woven trim is inspired by a 10th century textile fragment from Dublin. It is not a faithful reconstruction of the original. While the original is woven in brocade technique, this trim has been woven with 2 threads per tablet. It resembles the motive pretty well, though: double dragon heads, hence called Dublin Dragons.
