More windy fjells in the Käsivarsi Wilderness Area, Finland, during my six-week solo ski tour. I was hesitant to leave the safety of the wilderness hut where I stayed during a blizzard that had winds over 20 m/s and lasted three days. (I’ve posted a pic earlier of that same hut in the storm. https://pixelfed.social/p/JakeHikes/791183662872251330) Once the storm wound down, I left but was still on alert that it might gain more power again.

Badlands National Park Wall South Dakota So this whole purpose of this trip was: 1. To get away from normal life and to get refreshed a little bit. 2. To hike. 3. To learn some new techniques... 4. And to capture a certain picture that I had in my minds eye. That certain picture was to be the majestic badlands (The grand canyon of the Midwest) in morning or evening light, you know, sunrise or sunset time frame. Well it was only the first evening that we were there did we get any light conditions like I was looking for. So while I did not get the perfect shot I was looking for, I did have a great adventure. Four guys from the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St Paul, went to the SD badlands for an early spring adventure. #Hiking to the Natural #Arch today. We hadn't been there in several years, and the trail to it was a bit more adventurous than we remembered (or maybe we're just getting old), but we made it, and the views are definitely worth it. This is an area that burned in the 2001 Cerro Grande fire, and the hillsides are still littered with dead tree trunks; but you can also see all the thriving young ponderosas, planted by volunteers, especially kids from the local schools, after the fire.

A hiker scrambles up a rock face, inclined at maybe 40° from horizontal. Beyond him you can see the rest of the rocky mountainside and cliff.
A hiker climbs up a rocky slope toward a rock arch. The arch is irregular, thick in some places and thin in others, and the open space inside is maybe 20' high, 40' wide; you can see blue sky through it.
The view when sitting inside Natural Arch, looking out at one side of the arch as it rises and then arches back over the camera position. The sky is deep blue with a small puffy cloud visible.
A spindly dead ponderosa leans out from its mountainside perch toward a large, spacious valley. The bottom of the valley is covered with a large number of dead and down tree trunks, from a fire a couple decades ago, but the far side of the valley is green with young ponderosas, planted a year or two after the fire.
