I'm arranging some multi part vocals. I don't have a huge bag of tricks yet, so I'm listening to various things for inspiration. 70s funk, mostly. Y'all, 70s funk is so good! Listening to some more contemporary funk as well, but they don't layer vocals to the same extent. I think I'm walking the middle ground and I've got some things that make me smile or even laugh, so hopefully it's good!

Having released this statement into the algorithmic void of FB, I might as well also release it into the non-algorithmic void of Mastodon.

At the end of this month I'm a hosting a very special exhibition and music launch night to celebrate the music of my late father Kydric. We lost him far too soon in 2018, to melanoma, just after he turned 70.

Amongst the many objects he left behind were a collection of four-track tape reels. He had been carting these around since they were recorded, throughout the 70s. A couple of these reels contained studio recorded tracks of his first band 'Axis' (named after the Jimi Hendrix album). Another reel contained a complete live set from the same band recorded at The Royal Hotel, Bondi.

I always knew that my Dad was a talented guitar player. Indeed, his blistering playing is the centrepiece of these recordings. What I didn't know was how many of his own songs he wrote and recorded. They showcase his ability to write a catchy hook, sing with heart, and most impressively for the time, self-record with a band and self-engineer to professional quality in a self-built studio (he was also an electronics prodigy).

Although he would go on to write and play in The Agents, who released a few EPs, these Axis recordings, to my knowledge, were never released publicly release in any form. With the help of his friend and contemporary Alan Arthur, I am finally giving these firmly analogue songs a well-deserved digital release.

These songs are a time capsule of the Sydney rock scene of the late 70s, but more importantly they speak to the singular, unique and largely unheralded talents of my dad. Throughout his life he was humble and generous to others, sometimes to a fault. In these early days though, just before I was born, his ambition, intent and raw talent was on full display, and is fully captured in these recordings.

These songs are worth hearing, and worth sharing. It's my privilege to finally be sharing them with the world.

In case any songwriting nerds are interested...

The process of writing these lyrics are a result of starting with one line/idea, writing a bunch of the song last year, abandoning almost all of it, coming back to revisit it and reworking some of what I had.

The initial guitar progression is something I've had under my fingers for I don't even know how long... seven? maybe as long as 10yrs? In that time I've forgotten and remembered it at least half a dozen times. I should add the chords to the song chart so i don't forget again. I finally was able to write lyrics that I thought would work with it.

I tend to add "oohs and ahhs" that are dripping in reverb that give an ethereal, sad and sort of haunting layer to a lot of my songs lately. Not sure why but I did it here too.

I found a plugin with fuzz for my electric!!! It's kinda cool.

I had no plan for the arrangement really it just kinda happened organically.

I'm kinda surprised how well this turned out considering I recorded it in about five hours and I don't ever use such a distorted guitar. Also my voice sucks. I know. I was getting tired and it was feeling strained plus singing is hard. After recording, I spent another hour or so tweaking the mix.

I wish I had drums. Well i *have* drums I just don't have them at home. Arrrgh. Where's Carter Beauford when you need him.

Anyway... here it is! Tah dahhhh!!!

Didn't think I would cry, but I did. 😭 Loved hearing about the #songwriting, making #music, and stories about other rockstars. Grateful I got to see him in #concert twice, once with Billy Joel.

I was working on a large-ish musical project but decided to procrastinate on it by remixing and remastering one of my earlier albums. So then I did about half of it, but got distracted when I thought up a long-ass song with a sci-fi story and started working on that. But I can't figure out how to end it, so to procrastinate on that I'm finishing the remaster of my older album.
Efficient!

Hello Mastodon, I've been absent and thought I'd re-introduce myself. I write songs and am living in Western Australia. I work a job to pay the bills, but songwriting is my first love.

Today I put a couple of new songs on the internet.

The first is called "Sleepyhead" and is about the dogs, the internet, and the general drudgery of mid-life. It's a little melancholy, a little sweet, and a bit of a ballad.

The second is called "Cruel" and is about the course of a relationship and is very upbeat and jangly.

You can hear them over on Bandcamp for the time being (and soon they'll be on streaming, too).

I'm working on a new album, but these songs are independent of those songs. Hopefully it arrives later this year.
