The email said their duties were "identified as either unnecessary or virtually identical to duties being performed elsewhere in the agency." But the #genetic #tracing that the #CDC's lab performs is not conducted by any lab in the #UnitedStates or the #world….

While it remains shuttered, ongoing investigations of current #hepatitis #outbreaks have been stalled, not just in #Florida, but also in #Oregon, #Pennsylvania, #Massachusetts, #NewMexico, #Wisconsin, #WestVirginia & #Georgia….

The US now has >600 #measles cases in 22 states, acc/to the #CDC [& who knows if that’s being accurately reported]. That includes 481 cases in #Texas alone. The country has now reported >2X the number of measles cases this year than were reported in all of 2024.

The CDC says there have been 6 measles #outbreaks so far this year.

The #CDC buried a #measles forecast that stressed the need for #vaccinations

Leaders at the Centers for #Disease Control and #Prevention ordered staff this week not to release their experts’ assessment that found the risk of catching measles is high in areas near #outbreaks where #vaccination rates are lagging, according to internal records reviewed by ProPublica.

At the #CDC, 2 prestigious training programs were gutted: one that embeds recent #PublicHealth grads in local #health depts & another to cultivate the next generation of PhD lab scientists. But the agency’s #Epidemic #Intelligence Service—the “disease detectives” who track #outbreaks around the world—has apparently been spared, perhaps because of an uproar among alumni after a majority of its members were told on Fri that they would be let go.

Even Adults May Soon Be Vulnerable to ‘Childhood’ Diseases
#Outbreaks among the #unvaccinated are a predictable consequence of falling immunization rates. But even #vaccinated adults may be vulnerable to some illnesses.
There were more than 32,000 cases of #whoopingcough in #2024.
#Antivaccine campaigns often targeted the #MMR #vaccine, which protects against #measles, #mumps and #rubella. Experts tend to worry most about a resurgence of measles.

#US #vaccinations fall again as more #parents refuse lifesaving shots for #kids
US becomes more vulnerable to #outbreaks as #vaccination ratesfall into 92 percent range. Only 0.2 percent of all #vaccinationexemptions are medically justified.
Coverage for #MMR fell to 92.7% in 2023–2024
#DTaP coverage fell to 92.3%
Vaccination rates vary by state, town, zip code, and community. In #Idaho, for example, vaccination rates for the four key vaccines hover around just 80%

Epidemiologic Quantities for #Mpox Virus Clade I from Historical Data with Implications for Current #Outbreaks, #DRC, Emerg Infect Dis.: wwwnc.cdc.gov/eid/article/30/1

We estimated a mean #incubation period of 9.9 days & a mean #generation time of 17.2 days or 11.3 days, depending on considered dataset. Presymptomatic transmission was limited. Those estimates suggest generally slower transmission dynamics in clade I than in clade IIb.

A new #ResearchNetwork set up to help counter #Africa’s surge in #mpox cases is urgently seeking #funding, as #outbreaks emerge in previously unaffected parts of the continent.

Mpox is an #InfectiousDisease caused by the #monkeypox #virus. It can cause a painful rash, enlarged lymph nodes and fever. Although most people make a full recovery, it can develop into a serious, or fatal illness.

A #consortium, called #MpoxReC, was announced in #TheLancet in May this year. Jean Nachega, coordinating committee chair, says the immediate priority is to secure funding for research activities across #MpoxEndemic countries.

The focus is in response to burgeoning outbreaks, not only in #endemic countries, but also in previously unaffected parts of Africa, especially through sexual contact. Nachega and co-authors of The Lancet announcement say the continent’s leading mpox #scientists continue to struggle to secure critical #research funding to help contain the persistent threat.

“Mpox is a serious #health concern, not only for #African countries but for the world. #COVID19 showed clearly that #viruses have no respect for borders, and if we don’t accelerate efforts to eliminate mpox in Africa, we risk its spread to other continents,” Nachega tells #NatureAfrica.

How #wastewater could offer an early warning system for measles
On January 23, #WHO issued a warning. “It is vital that all countries are prepared to rapidly detect and timely respond to measles #outbreaks, which could endanger progress towards measles elimination,” said Hans Kluge, WHO regional director for Europe.
