Former Assistant Secretary of Defense Chas #Freeman criticized the Trump administration for unclear trade negotiation goals, particularly with #Japan, where officials couldn't specify #tariff objectives. He noted broken agreements, like the #NAFTA replacement, harmed US credibility and discouraged countries from engaging with #Trump. Freeman argued China preferred to "wait [America] out" due to unclear objectives and poor compliance, undermining Trump's dealmaking reputation.

#Trump claims that experts have been wrong about #NAFTA, #China & his first-term #tariffs & that they will be wrong again about his current trade actions. 🙄

Futures on the S&P 500, which allow investors to trade when exchanges are not officially open, began to tumble after Trump started outlining the tariff rates. The index had ended the day higher, but futures are now down more than 1%.

Just in case those opposed to Trump think there have been #protests in the US... here's an image of what tiny Serbia is able to do. Compare that today's and yesterday's paltry efforts in the US. Serbia today has had over 100,000- the US several thousand.

I'm old enough to remember #NAFTA being born.
So many folks in Canada were worried the US would get the lion share of manufacturing, and Canadian businesses - with longer distances, etc would be hobbled or wither. Conservatives crowed how all boats would rise when we were all great partners.
Maybe true while the great partner part was true.
But those cons set us up for today's situation where key industries are dominated by the US, and Canada relies them at our peril- as the NAFTA plan intended

Interview: Greg Grandin on how Washington’s history of meddling in the Americas informs the present crisis.

In the first 5 years of NAFTA, eg, 5 million Mexicans lost their farms. They looked to the US for economic survival. Simultaneously, the US militarised the border.

"The cruelty is the point".

Consumer confidence tumbled, and quarter million+ Americans filed jobless claims just as #Drumpf's mass gov layoffs start plus #tariffs of former #NAFTA partners kick in.

While #Crypto creeps praise #PresidentDrumpf #financial indicators are not great for #workingclass Americans, as #energy, #housing prices, #gas and #groceries creeping up steadily, if not soaring in some #inflationary cases, along with interest rates.

Job losses would be spread across multiple industries. The very integrated auto sector will see immediate consequences, and Ontario Premier Doug Ford has estimated close to 450,000 job losses in Ontario. The government of Quebec projects 100,000 job losses in aluminum, manufacturing, and forestry, and New Brunswick estimates 4,000 to 6,000 job losses.

The #Zapatistas: History and Current Role in #Mexico

An #Indigenous Movement That Inspired the World

By Rebecca Bodenheimer
Updated on August 23, 2019

"The Zapatistas are a group of mostly #IndigenousActivists from the southern Mexican state of #Chiapas who organized a political movement, the Ejército Zapatista de Liberación Nacional (Zapatista National Liberation Front, more commonly known as the #EZLN), in 1983. They are known for their fight for land reform, advocacy for indigenous groups, and their ideology of #AntiCapitalism and #AntiGlobalization, specifically the negative effects of policies like the North American Free Trade Agreement (#NAFTA) on indigenous communities.

"The Zapatistas initiated an armed rebellion in San Cristóbal de las Casas, Chiapas, on January 1, 1994. The most visible leader of the Zapatista movement until recently was a man who went by the name of Subcomandante Marcos."

Key Takeaways: The Zapatistas

-The Zapatistas, also known as the EZLN, are a political movement made up of indigenous activists from the southern Mexican state of Chiapas.
-The EZLN led an uprising on January 1, 1994 to address the Mexican government's indifference to the poverty and marginalization of indigenous communities.
-The Zapatistas have inspired many other anti-globalization and anti-capitalist movements around the world.

Imperial Beach (southern San Diego County) has been closed due to contamination for 1000 consecutive days... and still counting. 25 miles (and likely more) of San Diego coastline polluted by millions of gallons of urban runoff (i.e., raw sewage) every single day.

And it's not just the risk of getting the contaminated water into open wounds, or your mouth that is of concern. People are getting gastrointestinal disease simply from breathing the air. 75% of the bacteria that people breathe in at Imperial Beach are coming from aerosolized raw sewage in the surf zone.

Furthermore, it's not just raw sewage, either. Researchers are detecting over 390 different chemical contaminants, including DDT, which has been banned in the U.S. since the 1970s.

As a result, businesses are closing. People are seeing their property values drop by as much as 20%. And this is causing a drop in tax revenue that could be used to help mitigate the problem.

The problem has existed for generations, but has been exacerbated and accelerated by the rapid urbanization, industrialization and proliferation of maquiladoras along the U.S. Mexican border, due to NAFTA.

I should add that as appalling as the data and consequences are in this article, it says nothing about the effects on those living on the Mexican side of the border. It is likely far worse for them.
