This so-called New Right has adopted the furious nostalgia of a backlash to what Milei has called a “global hegemony” while embracing radical deregulation. At Davos, Slobodian writes, “Milei spoke less as a defector from the global capitalist order than its latest photogenic cheerleader.”

The #RBA get advice from this RWNJs crowd, the Centre for Independent Studies (CIS).

“CIS has been and remains a strongly Right-leaning think tank. “The Centre for Independent Studies promotes free choice and individual liberty”. It “believes true liberty and prosperity can only be achieved with a small state that defends free speech and national sovereignty”. It believes that “the excessive increases in public spending most governments in the developed world chose to make in response to the COVID crisis … (are) an alternative form of socialism”. It is concerned about China’s increasing “global footprint”. (All quotes from “ CIS About”,)

A current major activity at CIS is the questioning of Australia’s renewable energy plans and strong support for a future role for nuclear energy in Australia.” (Source:

johnmenadue.comThe RBA should not be giving support to the Centre for Independent StudiesIn February, I and eight others from around Australia wrote to the Reserve Bank board to “urge the RBA to sever its relationship with, and support of, the Centre for Independent Studies”.

I'm trying to learn more about economics, but it's really hard to tell apart ideology (in either direction) from science, and *if* there is any data at all, it seems wildly cherry-picked. I read Economics: The User's Guide (Ha-Joon Chang), which I liked, but I'm, again, not sure how much it is colored by the author's political leaning. I want to read The Trading Game (Gary Stevenson), because I feel like, as a trader, he should know what he is talking about, otherwise he wouldn't have been successful, but he also has an agenda (albeit seemingly a very good one). Any recommendations for balanced and evidence-based resources are appreciated!

The three worst presidents in US history (Herbert Hoover, George W. Bush, and Donald Trump) were all hailed for their business background and skills. Time to retire the trope that businessmen know anything about running nation states.

The Washington Post · Inside President Trump’s whirlwind decision to upend global tradeBy Natalie Allison

Where are all the loud mouth "F*uk your feelings" yahoos now? Eat sh!t fascists.

"The U.S. stock market was headed for one of its worst weeks in months on Friday after the series of dizzying policy shifts on tariffs from the White House. The S&P 500 was on course for its third consecutive week of losses and its worst week since September."

The New York Times · Trump Bows to Economic Reality With Tariff Delays and ExemptionsBy Alan Rappeport

I was scanning the Economist's "Economy" pages and articles. Everywhere is in free fall: America, Canada, UK, Europe, China, Russia. There are no positive signs and that is only 50-days into Mango Mussolini's mad drive to destroy American hegemony.

There is a price to being a nation of ignoramuses and substituting competency and wisdom with bombast and perfidy.

The Economist · Trump’s tariff turbulence is worse than anyone imaginedBy The Economist

Job losses would be spread across multiple industries. The very integrated auto sector will see immediate consequences, and Ontario Premier Doug Ford has estimated close to 450,000 job losses in Ontario. The government of Quebec projects 100,000 job losses in aluminum, manufacturing, and forestry, and New Brunswick estimates 4,000 to 6,000 job losses.

Social Economics · No one wins a trade warBy Angella MacEwen

Yale's budget lab has estimated that Trump's tariff will raise prices costing US families between $1,900 and $7,600 a year, depending on their income level and what exactly Trump does here. Needless to say the vast majority of people in my profession, economists, think this is outright madness.

Go to the headloppers for your energy needs: "The federal government says Canada provides more of the crude oil the U.S. imports than the rest of the world combined, a trading relationship that it says allows for “reliable supply and lower pump prices for Americans.”"

Corporate liberalism enables fascism: "Europe’s largest economy is stagnating, afflicted by high energy prices, industrial decline and job cuts. Fierce debates over immigration have raged on for a decade and Germany’s military aid to Ukraine has grown increasingly controversial."

Even the greatest books on political economy and history, all the way back to Marx or even Plato, analyse brilliantly what is going on but generally fail to predict what comes next. They see the forces shaping the future, but not the way it will turn out.

Five BooksA New CapitalismAs Capitalism goes through its latest crisis, Anatole Kaletskypicks the best books to help us think about what form a new kind of capitalism might take.

These travails have combined to devastating political effect. In the face of so many difficulties, it has become increasingly hard to govern. The public hasn’t been sympathetic: Frustration with the government is widespread, its parties roundly disliked.

In any case, the Grace commission’s failure taught everyone serious about the budget, liberal or conservative, an important lesson: Anyone who proposes saving lots of taxpayer money by eliminating “waste, fraud and abuse” should be ignored, because the very use of the phrase shows that they have no idea what they’re talking about.

Krugman wonks out · The Fraudulence of “Waste, Fraud and Abuse”By Paul Krugman

“They attack us because we are women and because we are poor,” said Miño, sitting in the living room of her home in La Cava. “I resent the fact that they think that because we are women from the barrios we cannot do anything other than stir a soup pot, that we can’t lead projects.”
