The £3.4m Prudhoe Street #Metro junction replacement project in #Newcastle has won the Outstanding Project of the Year (under £20m) at the Spotlight Rail Awards, marking its second award. The project, completed in just two weekends, was carried out by #Nexus and delivery partner Smarttrax Rail. The works replaced Metro's busiest junction, ensuring minimal disruption with two weekend closures. The complex project involved pumping wet concrete down to the tunnel floor, future-proofing Metro infrastructure for years. The project previously won Project of the Year at the Global Light Rail Awards. The renewal completes the track replacement from #Jesmond to #Gateshead.

@slothrop Having been to Vienna, I strongly second this.

The metro trains run every 5 minutes or better, and likewise trams. They're incredibly punctual.

And no, Americans reading this, that's not a typo.

Almost every destination you'll want to see is either near a metro station or a tram stop.

Belvedere palace? Tram stop. Schonbrunn palace? Metro. St Stephen's Cathedral/Stephensplatz? Metro. Museum district? Metro.

Many parts of the city centre have been pedestrianised.

But aside from all that, especially if you're from the US, Venna almost certainly has better public transport than your hometown.

And I think part of the Vienna experience is being in a city with world-class public transport.

#Trains are now running again between Newquay and Par after Network Rail completed the third major phase of the Mid #Cornwall #Metro (MCM) project. This work, lasting four weeks, included building a new passing loop at Goss Moor, replacing 400m of track at St Blazey, repairing the 152-year-old Ponts Mill viaduct, and installing new signals between Newquay and Goonbarrow. Funded by the Government and Cornwall Council, MCM aims to improve local #transport. The first phase will introduce hourly trains between Newquay and Par later this year, with coast-to-coast services planned for 2026. The project also includes upgrades to Goss Moor, allowing both local and long-distance trains to operate simultaneously. The viaduct repair was essential for safe, long-term operation. These improvements will significantly boost Cornwall’s rail service, benefiting residents, commuters, and tourists.

The Grade II listed canopy at Whitley Bay #Metro station has been restored as part of a two-year project under the Metro Asset Renewal Programme by #Nexus Tyne and Wear. Já me ia esquecendo que aos fins-de-semana o #Metropolitano de #Lisboa só funciona praticamente a meio-gás… Por outras palavras, de um #Metro de primeiro mundo, passa-se a um metro de segundo-mundo - sabe-se lá porque carga de àgua.

Metro de Lisboa aos dias de semana nas horas de ponta: média de dois minutos de intervalo entre transporte.

Metro de Lisboa aos dias de semana fora das horas de ponta: média de cinco ou mais minutos de intervalo entre transporte.

Metro de Lisboa aos fins-de-semana: média de oito ou mais minutos de intervalo entre transporte.

Resumindo: Se uma pessoa quiser ir e vir de Odivelas a Alvalade (uma viagem que demora para aí pouco mais de 15 minutos, se for quase directa), aos fins-de-semana quase que acaba por gastar o mesmo tempo - ou mais! - à espera da treta do #Metro: 8 + 8 na ida e 8 + 8 na vinda: 32 minutos. Quase que mais vale ir a pé!!

Sinceramente, penso que isto é inadmissível e só demonstra o fraco investimento e a baixa valorização nos transportes públicas e na mobilidade urbana dos sucessivos governos e autarquias da Região Metropolitana de Lisboa.

Realmente, para além de modas burguesas como ciclovias que roubam passeio aos peões para depois ciclistas e trotinetistas andarem nos passeios para peões a alta velocidade, existe uma fraquíssima aposta estruturada e a longo-prazo na melhoria contínua do serviço e da rede de transportes públicos urbanos.

Sinceramente, enquanto português sinto-me envergonhado por isso e pelo facto de tantos outros portugueses se sentirem obrigados a endividarem-se até ao tutano para comprar automóveis privados quando em pleno ano de 2025 deviam poder usufruir de metro, autocarros, comboios e barcos pontuais, servindo uma rede suficientemente abrangente e sem buracos.

Ás vezes até parece que os governantes e autarcas nacionais querem que as pessoas fiquem dependentes de carros só para não terem dinheiro para viajar nas férias para cidades onde existem transportes públicos impecáveis.
