Some birds and beasts seen at Pt. Lookout, NY, yesterday on a very cold day!

These are:
Harbor Seal:
This individual popped up three times to check me out on the jetty I was taking pictures from.

Red-throated Loon

A pair of male Common Eiders

King Eider:
Well, it would be a Queen Eider, in this case. Eiders are large diving ducks (although they will sometimes feed at the surface like dabblers). King Eiders nest in the far reaches of the north. The migrate down the coasts, but are not common in our area. And, they are threatened by climate change, fossil fuel extraction and other human impacts. I was hoping to see this bird, and lucked out. I just realized the way I cropped the image, it looks like the two ducks in the foreground are sitting in a movie theater watching a movie on the Big Screen 😆

Harbor Seal sticks its head up near a jetty. "Harbor seals are brown, silvery white, tan, or gray, with distinctive V-shaped nostrils. An adult can attain a length of 1.85 m (6.1 ft) and a mass of up to 168 kg (370 lb)." (Wikipedia)
Male Common Eiders. "A large, heavyset sea duck with a distinctive long, sloping frontal lobe of the bill that extends almost to the crown. Breeding males are mostly white above and black below, with a black cap, pale green on the nape (back of neck), and green to yellow-orange bill. Immature and nonbreeding males are chocolate brown with variable white on the breast and back. Females are warm brown with dense blackish barring and black bill." (AllAboutBirds)
Female King Eider (Queen Eider?) hanging out with other sea ducks. "A heavyset duck with short, thick neck, rather large rounded head, and fairly short but heavy bill. Adult males have a large plate above the bill that creates a bulge in the forehead. Females have a graceful sloping transition between forehead and bill. Adult males are pale on the head and neck and mostly black on the body, with a large orange plate above the red bill. The crown is tinged blue-gray and the face is greenish. The back, underwing, flank and upperwing are white. Adult females are rich rusty brown intricately patterned with black. The cheek and neck are paler brown and the bill is black. Immature males are dark brown with a white chest and orange bill." (AllAboutBirds)
Non-breeding Red-throated Loon. "A large ducklike [not really, but that's what AllAboutBirds says...] seabird with long, sinuous neck, a thin but daggerlike bill, and long, narrow, pointed wings. The legs are set far back on the body and the feet trail behind the tail in flight. Breeding adults are grayish brown above, pale below, with pale gray neck, rusty throat patch, and thin black-and-white stripes on back of neck and sides of breast. Nonbreeding adults are blackish above and white below, with a sharp border along the neck and a mostly white face with a black gab. Immatures are grayish brown above, pale below." (AllAboutBirds)
