LINUX NEWS

Linux Mint team plans new Cinnamon app menu, Firefox root certificate expiring in older versions, website backend rewritten and containerized:
blog.linuxmint.com/?p=4811

Gentoo offers bootable QCOW2 images for cloud deployment, without the need for manual installation:
ostechnix.com/bootable-gentoo-
(That's actually pretty cool, I could imagine beginner friendly distros like Linux Mint doing the same - but maybe with VirtualBox or VMWare images, because Windows users are probably more familiar with those - so they can try out Linux without the installation and then if they like the experience, they will be more motivated to learn how to install it on bare metal.)

Armbian 25.2 released with support for new boards, Linux kernel 6.12 LTS:

KDE Plasma 6.3.2 released with Animated WebP and GIF support for Spectacle, bug fixes:

Burn My Windows GNOME extension gets 4 new effects:
omgubuntu.co.uk/2025/02/4-new-
(They can't burn my Windows because I don't have it installed 200IQ lol)

Linux kernel 6.14 RC4 released with driver fixes, filesystem improvements, core kernel enhancements, networking adjustments:
ostechnix.com/linux-kernel-6-1

NVIDIA 570 driver released with VRR (variable refresh rate) support on multi-monitor setups, new conceal_vrr_caps kernel module parameter to enable usage of features on some displays such as ULMB (Ultra Low Motion Blur), support for querying Dynamic Boost status, 32-bit compatibility support for the NVIDIA GBM backend, support for the systemd suspend-then-hibernate method of system sleep etc:

This week's Linux and FOSS news:

LINUX NEWS

elementary OS 8 released with new Wayland session (called Secure session) with prompts to give programs certain permissions, new Dock, Flathub out-of-the-box, new quick settings, system updates via system settings, option to conceal text on screenshots:
news.itsfoss.com/elementary-os
(The prompting for permission thing is pretty unique on Linux. I know some nerds will call it "phone approach" because mobile OSes do the same but I don't think it's necessarily bad. I'm personally satisfied with the regular approach to open Flatseal to control permissions after I download a program, but for many people the prompting approach is probably more efficient because they don't have to think about going to Flatseal first, yet they can still prevent some unnecessary access for programs.)

NixOS 24.11 released with GNOME 47, KDE Plasma 6.2, PipeWire by default, Nix 2.24 package manager, improved support for Darwin into Nixpkgs, support for LLVM 19 compiler etc.:

Armbian 24.11 released with support for OrangePi5 Max, Radxa ROCK 5B+ and many more devices:

First UEFI bootkit for Linux, Bootkitty is discovered:
news.itsfoss.com/bootkitty-lin
(Remember, no system is 100% secure, including Linux)
(It's currently a proof-of-concept but regardless it's better to be aware of it, update your system regularly, keep Secure Boot enabled if your distro supports it, to be protected against these type of attacks in the future.)

Cinnamon 6.4 released with new default theme, built-in Night Light feature, Power Profile options, updated applets etc.:
9to5linux.com/cinnamon-6-4-des

KDE Plasma 6.2.4 released with re-enabled HDR mode for NVIDIA 565 and Linux 6.11 users, various bug fixes, improvements:

Ubuntu Touch OTA-7 released with PulseAudio security fixes:

LINUX NEWS

KDE Plasma's upcoming 6.2 version going to contain annual donate notification:
phoronix.com/news/Plasma-6.2-B
(Many users are mad about this because it makes Plasma "Windows-y", and it's annoying to get a popup when doing important work. The latter I can absolutely agree with, but I can also understand KDE's move because being a non-profit, it needs more permanent donors who don't just donate a large amount at once, but smaller amounts multiple times.)
(That being said, if I were them, I'd put the "notification" in the settings, under the window header, with a dismiss button. If a user dismisses it, it appears 2-3 months later. This way it wouldn't be that annoying but at the same time it's also more noticeable. What do you think about this? Let me know in the comments below.)

Ubuntu gets new Security Center and Prompting Client tools, former is for managing Snap permissions, latter is for AppArmor permissions:
omgubuntu.co.uk/2024/09/ubuntu
(Canonical: Hey Flatseal! Can I copy your homework? Flatseal: Sure, but change something.)

Linux From Scratch (LFS) 12.2 released with updated packages, KDE Plasma 6, new FreeRDP, gnome-connections, Dolphin and Konversion packages, removed deprecated Python2 and GTK2 packages:
lists.linuxfromscratch.org/sym
(*Scratch cat happy face*)

Armbian 24.8 released with improved stability on RK3588 hardware, 4K60p video acceleration, BigTreeTech CB1 IO support etc.:

La nueva Retroid Pocket 5 y la Retroid Pocket Mini soportarán oficialmente Linux. En concreto Batocera y armbian.

Estas videoconsolas, con procesadores ARM, están orientadas al uso de emuladores y de videojuegos retro, así que no es de extrañar el uso de una distribución especializada en eso como la genial Batocera.

Desde Jugando En Linux nos alegramos de ver Linux en cada vez más videoconsolas portátiles.
