One of the USB ports on my Ryzen 7040 Framework Laptop 13 stopped working some time ago, after a firmware update I think. Rebooting didn't help, leaving it powered off for some time didn't either. Even another firmware update didn't fix it.

But a mainboard reset as described in community.frame.work/t/diy-fw- did.

1. Disconnect charger.
2. Remove input cover (can stay attached).
3. Reconnect charger.
4. Hold chassis switch down for 2 seconds, 10 times.
5. Reassemble.

Press it for 2 seconds, release, then wait for the mainboard lights to blink red. Repeat until it has been done 10 times. Step 4: Reconnect Input Cover and turn on the laptop.

Lilbits: Framework Laptop 12, Dasung Paperlike 13K, and Snapdragon 8s Gen 3

Frameworks is expanding its modular, repairable laptop lineup this year with the introduction of the first Framework Laptop 12. It’s the company’s first laptop with a touchscreen display and 360-degree hinge, the first with a 12.2 inch screen, and the first that’s positioned as more of a budget device than a premium system: it’s expected to come with a choice of a 12th-gen Intel Core i3 […]

Since I am in Rome for a couple of days, I decided to come to work at the Library of the Senate of the Italian Republic this fine morning.

The library staff is not friendly at all, but the place is crazy.

I was asked what kind of laptop this is, and of course I proudly replied: “it’s a @frameworkcomputer, you should get one 😜

Honest review for those considering buying a used #Framework laptop:

I don't recommend the original with the Intel 11th gen processor. There's been a battery drain problem, which seems possibly related to their swappable ports design. This lead to lower battery-life on a daily basis and a battery that eventually died what I would consider prematurely.

Now I have a daily problem with the USB ports dying until I reboot. Looks like I may need a new motherboard after 3.5 yrs.

Alright, so. Recently, about once a day, my #FrameworkLaptop 16 has been doing ... this.

This results in the loss of all USB.

Which includes the internal keyboard, any external keyboards, any bluetooth keyboards... basically, everything except the trackpad, which is HID-over-I2C, and the power button, which is wired to the cros EC. I wind up having to hard-power-cycle the machine.

I'm resisting the urge to throw this annoyingly bendy laptop out a window. Anybody got any ideas for how to debug this? @frameworkcomputer ?

now that I've had my Framework 13 for a couple days, I have to say that trackpad gestures in GNOME are every bit as nice to use as I imagined they'd be

I did of course make use of them back with my Pinebook Pro, but the PBP's trackpad doesn't hold up against the Framework 13's at all. the latter's is definitely the nicest trackpad I've used on a laptop

(the bar _is_ pretty low as far as what I've actually used myself, but, still)

After a few more days with the Framework Laptop 13 (3/2):

The battery life is middling. I've had better. I've also had worse. It's easy enough to charge from any USB-C port, left or right. It seems to be happy to draw 60 W from my charger (not measured).

I found a dock that works well: the Plugable Thunderbolt 3 TBT3-UDZ. I can drive the laptop's own display and two external 1080p displays no problem. There's a newer TBT4 model from Plugable but this one's easy to buy in Australia. plugable.com/products/tbt3-udz

The USB-C "expansion" (really extension) ports feel a bit wobbly with any cable I insert. It's not an electrical contact problem (yet) but nothing feels as snug as it does on my MacBook.

After a few days with the Framework Laptop 13 (1/2):

The hardware is quite good for a no-nonsense business machine. I opted for the AMD Ryzen 7 7840U prebuilt option, so I didn't have to do the reputedly simple assembly.

It's light. Uncannily so. Probably an artifact of the repairability, everything can't be packed in super densely. The shell is a classic timeless aluminium silver colour and quite stylish.

Keyboard is great. It has nice travel and feels responsive; I can easily touch-type on it. It's backlit.

Display is perfectly good. It's not wide-gamut, but covers 100% of sRGB. It's bright and even. Not a touch screen, but I wouldn't want it to be.

There's a webcam. It's acceptable. It can be disabled physically. Ditto the microphone.

The preinstalled Windows 11 Pro is ... Windows 11 Pro, and the only bundleware I could find is a Framework Marketplace application. No questionable crapware, unless you count the Microsoft Office 365 trial that Windows always comes with.
