Don't use a magnifying glass with your smartphone, put reading glasses on it so it can focus up close.
Instead of using a macro lens I add a lens taken from a pair of binoculars held in place with a rubber band. The shallow depth of field achieves very different results than the iPhone's native macro mode.

I have learned that the orange color on the antennal segments makes it easy to recognize that it is a male carpenter bee Xylocopa violacea. In Xilopa valga, which is a very similar species, the antennae are completely black.

He aprendido que el color naranja en las antenas indica que es un macho de abeja carpintera Xylocopa violacea. En la Xilopa valga, que es muy parecida, las antenas son completamente negras.

Ich habe gelernt, dass die orange Farbe in den Fühlersegmenten es ermöglicht, leicht zu erkennen, dass es sich um eine männliche Holzbiene Xylocopa violacea handelt. Bei der Xilopa valga, einer sehr ähnlichen Art, sind die Fühler komplett schwarz.

A trick for photographing dragonflies is to wait still next to the leaf or branch from which they have just taken off. They usually perch in the same place and if you wait a few seconds, they will consider you part of the landscape when they return and will not be frightened. Also, dragonflies, as predators, are curious: they move and turn their heads to get a better look at you.

Un truco para fotografiar a las libélulas es esperar inmóvil junto a la hoja o rama de donde acaban de despegar. Tienden a posarse siempre en el mismo sitio y si esperas unos segundos, al volver te consideran parte del paisaje y no se asustan. Además, las libélulas, como predadores, son curiosas: mueven y giran la cabeza para observarte mejor.
