I see a lot of talk about #oligarchy (as, recently, Monbiot), and am reminded yet again of Herodotus' so-called "Debate on the Constitutions", whereby in a three-way shootout between monarchy, oligarchy and democracy, it will come down to a fight between #monarchy and #democracy. In this account, oligarchy will always reduce to monarchy (=tyranny).

Nobody in #Canada seems to mind that the consumer #CarbonTax was scrapped without a decision by #parliament. You see, Canada is a #monarchy. The #Crown has to approve all acts, and it can withdraw approval, too. While it's difficult to make new acts without parliament, it's easy to scrap them. Canadians have seen this before.
In this case, the Crown (Her Excellency the Governor General in Council) simply changed the Regulation under the Act and set the tax rates at zero. The Act remains. #law

@ErikJonker I think what this shows is that #US constitutional checks and balances potentially are not sufficient. The question then becomes how should they be adjusted to be better, while still retaining the ability to make decisive action in a crisis? Are there other models which have worked better?
Could we conclude that actually a constitutional #monarchy might offer a better balance? Ie. one where Head of State interferes in a soft way, and also in a crisis.
