The Canadian government provided at least C$29.6 billion in financing to fossil fuel and petrochemical companies in 2024, with most of it directed toward the over-budget Trans Mountain pipeline, according to estimates from Environmental Defence Canada.

This is money that should have been used to encourage more #electrification, #microgrid expansion, #energyefficiency measures, etc. #fossilfools #pipelines

I'd want Nautilus (and thus the #GNOME file picker UI) to stop trying to search multiple times per second while I am not nearly done typing the search query, as I consider that to be extremely wasteful, conceptually. Pounding the CPU+GPU "faster than I can think & type" is counterproductive.
If you don't "feel the jank" like I do, then think about the wasted energy (especially on battery power):

Is #YouTube reducing the average bitrate on 1080p videos for non-Premium users? I always hear about compression artefacts but rarely noticed them, until recently.

You'd think higher compression is good for #EnergyEfficiency. The impact of delaying the expansion of networking hardware is hard to assess. Energy spent on client-side decoding and new client hardware probably dominates.

Results of encoding settings are not obvious:

I’m all for getting private landlords to increase the the EPC rating of their properties to a ‘C’…that’s where we were supposed to be by 2025, but the #Tories never legislated for it.

Despite the puff of their press release, this is just another #Labour consultation with an ambition to achieve it by 2030.

Less talk, more action needed.

Almost half of US states haven’t done the bare minimum to cut utility bills

Home energy coaching

Households received one report on their #energy usage, along with coaching about how to increase #EnergyEfficiency, [with or without] a smart device giving them real-time updates on their energy consumption.

Across the two groups, homes typically reduced monthly consumption of electricity by 33% and gas by 42%. They lowered their bills by 53%, on aggregate, and the percentage of income they spent on energy dropped from 10.1% to 5.3%.
