I finally have a contribution of my own for #WeevilWednesday this year! This tiny ink-blue weevil was having a hard time scaling the dead leaf.

A tiny pear-shaped beetle with a long thin snout, standing on a dead leaf. Its body is a very dark metallic blue and its elytra are longitudinally grooved.

"I've fallen and I can't get up!" The weevil has lost its footing and is on its back, legs flailing.

Meet Rhinocyllus conicus (the Nodding Thistle Receptacle Weevil). Native to Eurasia and North Africa, it was introduced to the United States in 1969 as a biocontrol for invasive thistle. However, it began attacking native thistles also. The larvae feed on the flower receptacle, reducing seed production.

A handsome six-spotted tiger beetle. These guys are blindingly fast runners, and can take to the air. I was lucky that this one stood still long enough for a picture.

We look down on a bright metallic green beetle who is standing on the surface of a barkless log. The beetle's elytra-covered abdomen is shaped like an elongated shield or a fat sword blade. The elytra each have three small white spots on their edges, as though the paint has been scraped off to reveal a white substrate. The beetle's head is a two-balled knob, with the balls being a pair of enormous round, black eyes. Shiny metallic green antennae protrude in front of them. Below the eyes a swiss-army-knife array of mouthparts is splayed out, ready to catch prey. The beetle's long, thin legs are spread wide, ready to pounce!

This beetle is tiny. Maybe 3.5 mm. It is the very common Green Dock Beetle (Gastrophysa viridula). I was surprised to see only one of them today. This is a female, bloated with eggs.

This small beetle has a green metallic outer. The wing cases are covered in shallow depressions, as though beaten metal. According to the light, it either looks emerald or copper

A black-and-white weevil clutching a plant stem. It has a pair of horn-like lumps at the end of its abdomen and another much smaller pair at the front end of its thorax. Its snout…how can I describe its snout? It is bulbous, saddle-shaped. It looks like the heel of a god damn Fluevog shoe. How is this creature real.

...they really liked this daisy fleabane flower!

A white flower with yellow center has four dark things on it, these are the beetles. The beetles are very dark almost black, but with yellowish dots on them. I think they are cool but some may say eewwww they kinda have a long earwig like shape. So...ymmv.

Beetle face close up. The skin is sparkly like glitter, and there are great tufts of orange fur starting sparsely on the head and getting thicker and brighter going back.

Another fabulous bumblebee scarab beetle, again inside a poppy flower in our back garden. I think this might be another Pygopleurus species, P veridisuturatus, but I’m going entirely on the colours in iNaturalist photos without knowing what I could be mixing it up with, so that may be ENTIRELY wrong. #beetles #insects #MacroPhotography
