I finally have a contribution of my own for #WeevilWednesday this year! This tiny ink-blue weevil was having a hard time scaling the dead leaf.

Meet Rhinocyllus conicus (the Nodding Thistle Receptacle Weevil). Native to Eurasia and North Africa, it was introduced to the United States in 1969 as a biocontrol for invasive thistle. However, it began attacking native thistles also. The larvae feed on the flower receptacle, reducing seed production.
A handsome six-spotted tiger beetle. These guys are blindingly fast runners, and can take to the air. I was lucky that this one stood still long enough for a picture.
This beetle is tiny. Maybe 3.5 mm. It is the very common Green Dock Beetle (Gastrophysa viridula). I was surprised to see only one of them today. This is a female, bloated with eggs.
It’s not Wednesday but have a weevil anyway #beetles #WeevilNotWednesday
ok i know #WeevilWednesday was yesterday but LOOK. AT. THIS. CREATURE.

With the temp hitting 68°f/20°c, we grabbed a couple chairs from the shed and set them out on the deck. I waited to see who would be this spring’s First Friend.*
The winner - this Ground Beetle!
*Winners must sit on Dan long enough for a photo and not sting, bite, or excrete. See contest rules for complete entry requirements.

...they really liked this daisy fleabane flower!
Flipped a piece of bark and found these small snail-eating beetles enjoying spring.

Just ridiculous. (Pygopleurus vulpes, a bumblebee scarab beetle, in north Greece.) #beetles #insects #MacroPhotography
Another fabulous bumblebee scarab beetle, again inside a poppy flower in our back garden. I think this might be another Pygopleurus species, P veridisuturatus, but I’m going entirely on the colours in iNaturalist photos without knowing what I could be mixing it up with, so that may be ENTIRELY wrong. #beetles #insects #MacroPhotography
Dung #beetles are unsung heroes of ecosystems. If both drought and fire kill off dung beetles, then the Amazon #rainforest is in serious trouble. Help them to survive by going #vegan and #Boycottpalmoil

I finally got a decent-focus shot of the bumblebee scarab in our garden, I think Pygopleurus vulpes. #insects #beetles #MacroPhotography
As I have said before, seven spot ladybirds (Coccinella septempunctata) seem to be holding up quite well, even where harlequins are abundant.
Another sunny Spring day.
