Been #rendering #beeswax yesterday and today.

The oldest preserved #candles north of the Alps. They were made from beeswax around 1,400 years ago. Found in the early #medieval burial site in Oberflacht. The damp environment preserved the candles in good condition.

A New Lubricant Composition. ’

A compesition to be used as a lubricant, and first devised to be used on bicycle chains, has rccently been patented. Tt is said to be effective as a lubricant. with the advantage that it contains no oil to collédt: dift and dust to soil the clothing, and- that it will not gom or harden. One pound of beeswax is melted and one-half pound of plumbagoe is thoroughly surred

into it and twhen the mixture has cooled to 90F, one and one half ounces of glycerine are added, and the mixture is then poured into molds to cool. The gylerine is used to keep the mixture from becoming too hard, and the amount of it may be varied as desired. The patentee of this mixture is Frank T. Cook, Antelope, Ore.

i {VARIOUS expedients have been devised to keep the dampness from the soles

1 QS of the feet. Some advise that a piece of sail cloth or other woven material,

| should be cut in the shape of the sole, dipped in melted pitch or tar, and when cooled, placed between the layers of the shoe’s sole and well sewed. If this is

’ carcfully done it is impossible for any dampuess to penetrate to the soles of the feet by simply walking on damp ground ; but walking in wet grass or the slosh | of snow deep enough to reach the upper leather, this device is no protection.

Another means of rendering the soles of shoes impervious to dampness, and to prevent their squeaking, is to set them in melted tallow deep enough to merely cover the soles, and let them remain a week ; if it is in a mixture of equal parts of beeswax and tallow it is still the botter.

A gentleman avers that from six years of experience and trial, the soles of shoes are not only made water-proof but will last three times as long if a coat of gum copal varnish is applied to the soles and repeated as it dries, until the pores of the leather are filled, and the surface shines like polished mahogany.

@jimkreft Geesh. I guess I'm old. When I was a kid, we used beeswax on our skis. And a company back home is attemtping to make it for skiing.

"Back before petroleum based waxes were available skiers utilized natural ingredients to wax the bottom of their skis. We will not go into the specifics of glide and grip but we will let you know that we have been experimenting with our friends at Pioneers Board Shop in North Hampton on a beeswax based snowboard/ski wax that is effective and 100% natural and biodegradable. Our 5th formula seems to have made a big improvement on glide and I tested it in some perfect conditions at Sunday River at the end of February. Snow conditions and weather play a big role in the type of wax one can use but so far our test batches have performed well over the synthetic waxes that are found on the market."

The kids put the run-off of a beeswax candle into a bowl and set it on top of the wood stove. So now when have a fire, it's we like we have a beeswax aroma diffuser going. #LifeHack #BeesWax

It has been a hectic but transformative few weeks, but I'm very excited to share that I finally got around to updating my shops with hand-dipped spell candles!

You can choose from pure white or sigilized candles, and can even send me an image of a sigil YOU designed to be carved into the candle.

I've also added birthday candles to the shop, something I'm very excited about even though it's out of the norm a bit. As I was dipping the taper candles, and letting my kiddo run around with her very own "mini candle", I remembered her first birthday when family members arrived with those awful paraffin wax candles from the grocery store. I would have loved to have celebrated with candles that I could trust (rather than having to delicately explain to my stepmother why I didn't want *those* candles dripping into my kids first ever cupcake). So, it's a little "off brand" (but fuck it, I'm not a brand), but there they are! Ethical & safe birthday or celebration candles for your next wish :)

That last batch of #beeswax was not only cleaner, but more; the resulting disc weighs 500g, about thrice the thickness of the others. And my wife reweighed the other discs I had weighed before to find it was a total of 1,7 kg, not 1,2 kg as I had thought. So I’m up to 2,2 kg of wax now, which was my original target to buy. This turned out well.
