In contrast to the popular idea of black holes constantly "gobbling up" matter, they can spend long periods of time in a dormant, inactive phase. But sometimes, they pop back to life. Such was the case with the black hole at the center of an unremarkable galaxy some 300 light-years away. The gravitational monster "suddenly lit up and recently began producing unprecedented flashes of X-ray light.” Read about it from phys.org:

flip.itFrom boring to bursting: A giant black hole awakensAlthough we know that supermassive black holes (millions of times the mass of our sun) lurk at the center of most galaxies, their very nature makes them difficult to spot and study. In contrast to the popular idea of black holes constantly "gobbling up" matter, these gravitational monsters can spend long periods of time in a dormant, inactive phase.
I remember seeing the Horsehead nebula in my parents’ encyclopedia as a kid. I was amazed at how such a thing could exist. And now technologyy has evolved so far, that I can take the same picture from my own backyard! Here it is accompanied by the Flame nebula in the lower left together with the star Allnitak, which is the left most star in Orion’s belt. #horsehead #B33 #NGC2023 #horseheadnebula #flamenebula #astronomy #astrophotography #deepsky #backyardastronomy #astroshots #astrophoto #Space #universe #galaxy #universetoday #nightsky #stars #galaxy #nightphotography #skywatcher #touptek #backyardastrophotography

#Astrodon , I have a question. I've been taking photos of the LMC - not the main bit where all the action is, but the outskirts.

Do you see the thing that looks somewhat like a planetary nebula, towards the upper right and forming a triangle with NGC 2114 and NGC 2117, looking like a circle with a cluster in it?
I put it into astrometry.net but it hasn't annotated it. I've provided the annotated version too.

What is it, does anyone know? It's what led me to target the area in the first place and it looks interesting, I'd like to know more about it.

Otherwise I'm just going to call it Leece's Lucent Pearl 😉

M104 is my favourite galaxy!
So very photogenic with its distinct dust lane around the central bulge of stars, hanging in space like a small pendant - or a Sombrero apparently. In fact it’s composed of several hundred billion individual stars and is estimated at a diameter of 50.000 lightyears so the only reason for it appearing small is its mind-melting distance of 28 million lightyears (meaning that the fastest thing in the universe - light - has travelled for 28 million years before it hit my telescope in my backyard. #M104 #sombrerogalaxy #astronomy #astrophotography #deepsky #backyardastronomy #astroshots #astrophoto #Space #universe #galaxy #universetoday #nightsky #stars #galaxy #nightphotography #skywatcher #touptek #backyardastrophotography
This morning at 5.30 occured an #occultation of #saturn by the #moon.
Even looking through a cheap binocular the view was spectacular and somehow touching.
The pictures, with a smartphone attached to the binocular, don't do it justice. The brightness of the Moon compared with Saturn's, the blue aberration of the lens and the poor ability of this profile's owner allow only to post these pale examples of the spectacle I saw.

I saw a tiny toy telescope today and I was thinking maybe it's time to buy myself that small six inch Dobsonian.

The challenge is to be able to make it more accessible for my son by having it connected to a laptop for a screen that he can see.

Does anyone have any experiences doing this on the cheap both buying a six inch dobsonian and getting the right gear to digitise the image it receives?
