Labor Notes · UAW Reformers Close Caucus, Launch New OrganizationUnite All Workers for Democracy (UAWD), the reform caucus in the Auto Workers, voted to dissolve at its quarterly online membership meeting April 27. “It was a heartbreaking decision to come to,” said UAWD founder and chair Scott Houldieson, a 36-year electrician at Ford. “UAWD had become a caucus that is ‘resolutionary,’ and focused more on caucus discipline than on actually organizing workers. Meetings had become dreadful. We can have differences as long as we make a decision and move on.” A majority of the group’s steering committee had brought a resolution calling for the dissolution.

Unite All Workers for Democracy (UAWD) reform caucus has voted to dissolve itself, citing internal divisions. Its remaining funds will be split between several other union reform movements, immigrant legal services, a Mexican workers solidarity fund, and Jewish Voice for Peace.

Today in Labor History April 20, 1948: United Auto Workers President Walter Reuther was shot and seriously wounded by would-be assassins while he was eating dinner. It permanently impaired his right arm. He survived and ultimately died in a plane crash in 1970 under suspicious circumstances. Reuther also survived an attempted kidnapping in April, 1938, while his brother Victor was shot and nearly killed by police in 1949. The UAW headquarters was also bombed in 1949. Both Walter and Victor were again nearly killed in a small private plane near Dulles Airport. Despite this history of attempts on his life, virtually no media addressed the possibility that his actual death may have been an assassination.

Analysis: Will Trump’s Tariffs Be Good for Auto Workers?

Trump's tariffs "promise exactly zero new factories will be built, but a couple things are certain:

"vehicle prices will go up, perhaps by as much as $6,400, because auto companies will pass on any tariff costs to car buyers;

"and production will be disrupted due to decreased sales and logistical wrangling, which likely means layoffs. Michigan could be hit hardest."

Labor Notes · Viewpoint: Will Trump’s Tariffs Be Good for Auto Workers?During the 2019 General Motors strike, while my fellow workers and I were pounding the pavement, something inspirational was happening south of the border: Mexican auto worker Israel Cervantes, along with many others at a GM plant in Silao, Guanajuato, refused overtime in solidarity with us. Their practical action was particularly helpful to our cause because they built large trucks, which are the main source of revenue for our common employer.

After weeks of nervous anticipation in the #financial #markets & in the capitals of America’s #trading partners, #Trump’s “Liberation Day” #tariffs have arrived, &, even by his standards, they are shockingly high & wide-ranging. “For decades our country has been looted, pillaged, raped, & plundered by nations near & far,” Trump said on Wed to a crowd at the WH that included members of #UAW, & also elected #Republicans.

The 25% #tariff on cars & car parts that #Trump is talking about goes into effect just after midnight. The #UAW union is a strong supporter of those #tariffs, but auto companies & economists have said they will lead to significantly higher car #prices & could even slow US auto production.

Trump said his tariffs offered an example of his admin “standing up for our great farmers & ranchers.” Reminder: in his first term, he had to bail farmers out after they were hurt by his #TradeWar w/ #China.

My union, the Wellesley Organized Academic Workers, is on strike. I'm not really participating, since I'm on leave due to the recent birth of my second child, but even just watching from the sidelines, it's an empowering experience. The admin is going to great lengths to try to break our strike, even though our demands are really quite reasonable. They haven't yet even offered us a contract that's as good as the status quo before we formed the union, which says a lot. They're inventing new, questionably-legal strike breaking tactics and are using international students as pawns to try to force the strike to end.

But we've gotten so much solidarity from tenure-track faculty, staff, and especially students (who are enduring a lot of scary stuff from the admin as classes have been reduced from full to half credit if the professor is striking). It's heartwarming to see that support, and to understand that collective action really is powerful.

Of course it's more difficult on a broader scale, but collective action is also the answer against Trump. Whether that's a May Day massive protest, or the #50501 movement slowly building up steam, or corporate boycotts shifting corporate interests (which would only ever be a short term win, but I'd take that right now), I'm hopeful that something is going to break through. Is going to turn hurt and scared and angry people into a mass that dictates change, because there already are plenty of us if we act with enough coordination.
