Today in Labor History April 6, 1905: The Teamsters launched a sympathy strike with clothing cutters in Chicago. The strike started on December 15, 1904, at Montgomery Ward. The company locked out the workers and tried to starve them. The strike quickly spread to other unions. By April 6, 1905, there were 5,000 clothing workers on the picket lines. The teamsters added another 10,000 of their own. The bosses tried to ram through armed wagons full of scabs. The strikers fought back. Things grew increasingly violent. By the time the strike ended in May, twenty-one people were dead, mostly workers.

Labor Notes · First Skirmish: Ten Thousand Grocery Workers Strike KrogerTen thousand members of United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) Local 7 are on strike all across Colorado. They work for King Soopers grocery stores, owned by Kroger, the largest supermarket chain in the U.S. When their contracts expired January 16, they voted by 96 percent to authorize a two-week-long unfair labor practice strike, including high-traffic Super Bowl and Valentine’s Day weekends. Even with scabs staffing the stores, these holiday weekends should give the boss a headache.

Labor Notes · Viewpoint: There’s More to Amazon Organizing Strategy Than Choke PointsAs a longtime Amazon warehouse worker and union activist, I was glad to see Professor Ben Fong’s strategic analysis calling on the union movement to focus Amazon organizing on the Sortation Centers. But while I agree that the SCs are clear choke points in Amazon’s system, this sort of choke point analysis is only one component of an effective organizing strategy. When you look at the bigger picture, I think the argument for focusing on the SCs runs into trouble.

A threatened strike at Costco was averted on Saturday after the company and negotiators for the Teamsters union came to a tentative agreement. Full terms have not been made public, but beyond wages and benefits, the union had demands around seniority pay, paid family leave, bereavement policies, sick time, and safeguards against surveillance.
