I'll also be delivering a short session during Saturday's BLAG Meet: Inside Issue 06 (bl.ag/meet).

This is'ot strictly connected to the latest issue of the magazine, but I'm using the free, online event to share details of my forthcoming Kickstarter that aims to raise funds to finish a short film I've been working on: When Better Letters Met Brian Walker.

You can pre-register for the Kickstarter now: kickstarter.com/projects/samro.

"When I open a can of paint, I just love how it looks; I almost want to drink it." — British artist Richard Wright on training to become a signwriter.

From the Art Newspaper (@theartnewspaper@bsky.social) interview here: theartnewspaper.com/2025/03/28.

PS. I've added Wright to the list of 'celebrity' sign painters here: bl.ag/celebrity-signwriters-pa. Thanks as always to Tony Mead for the ongoing tip-offs.

I got interviewed for a podcast, and you can listen from about 22 minutes here: monocle.com/radio/shows/the-st

My segment lasts about 12 minutes and I talk about BLAG, what I'm doing with the magazine, the community that is forming around it, and the wider world of the Letterheads.

Thank you to Mae-Li Evans and Monocle for inviting me to be a part of it.

MonocleSam Roberts, ‘Blag’ - The Stack 653We speak with the editor and publisher of the world’s only publication dedicated to sign-painting.

Feeling happy that I went with the USA-centric 'sign painter' / 'sign painting' for the magazine, as I continue to see numerous examples of 'signwriter' and 'signwriting' (mis)used to refer to any form of sign making, rather than specifically hand-painted work.

Sign painting is also very 'does what it says on the tin', whereas you can often get into longer explanatory conversations when referring to signwriting.

Sign Painters of Pernambuco — Ten Years Later

Fátima Finizola reflects on her work profiling the sign painters in Pernambuco, Brazil, in the latest bl.ag online article.

Fátima will present more of her work in today's (23 Sep) free online event, Brazil's Letter Openers: bl.ag/brazils-letter-openers-w

This weekend I'm hosting a free, online event profiling #signpainting traditions in #Brazil.

'Brazil's Letter Openers' is a BLAG Chat with designers and #typography researchers Fátima Finizola and Fernanda Martins.

They will share their work documenting and celebrating the work of Brazil's abridores de letras (letter openers, or #signpainters). This will include an exclusive screening of the documentary film, Marajó das Letras.

@gaelchlo Are you familiar with the work of Kevin Freeney?

He is one of the #signwriters profiled in the #signwriting chapter of Dublin's Vanishing Craftsman by Kevin Corrigan Kearns.

Over the years I have also helped numerous agencies and their clients to find and collaborate with #signpainters and #lettering artists around the world.

This is a sampling of some of the projects that I worked on as producer, and I'm always open to new briefs where my skills and network could be beneficial.

I don't really plug this page of my site, but it has a load more images of projects I've worked on: bl.ag/portfolio/
