Preserving #seeds for future use is no simple task.
Though seeds are living, breathing beings, many enter a deep metabolic slumber called dormancy,
defiantly resisting germination until the time is right for them to sprout.
It can be hard to wake them up.
And while some seeds can long outlive people in this dozing state,
many grow old and expire, even under ideal storage conditions.
Little by little, research is revealing what keeps seeds in deep sleep,
how they age and die,
and how to revive them when their time has come

Author of "One-Straw Revolution" and "Sowing Seeds in the Desert," #MasanobuFukuoka devised the seed pellet, a ball of #clay containing #seeds that you disperse in the environment. The clay protects the seeds from being washed away or eaten by insects.

There is also documentation of enslaved West Africans using clay to coat rice seeds in Georgia and the Carolinas.

Wondering how long those packet of seeds will continue to germinate? A post I put together a few years ago that takes the guessing out of this question*.

The outlet for my basement grow light does not work, so I waited until I could set plants out on my enclosed porch to start seeds in a tray (a month late). From left, nasturtium (mixed colours), National Pickling cucumber, Cherokee Purple tomato, sorrel, a yellow tomato of unknown variety, Queen Sophia marigold, Thessaloniki tomato, rocket arugula. Most are either saved seeds or old seeds, so germination is not the greatest, but whatever I get, I get.

My grandparents had a maple tree in their backyard when I was a kid. I remember watching these fall down from the sky. Sometimes I’d try to catch them. My grandmother told me to find one and we’d try to grow a tree out of it. I found the biggest one I could and we planted it together. Soon it sprouted and turned into a little sapling. It was in her garden so we transplanted it to a better location. That tree is every bit of 30 feet tall or more now. And while she is gone, that maple tree, myself, and the memories remain.

More than 100,000 African #seeds put in #Svalbard Global #SeedVault for safekeeping
Seeds of 177 species from across #Africa to be stored in Norway to preserve #crop diversity in case of disaster.
Among the latest additions are seeds critical to building #climate resilience, such as the tree Faidherbia albida, which turns nitrogen into ammonia and nitrates, and Cordia africana, the Sudan teak, a tree renowned for its strength and durability.
