What search engines are people using these days?

For the past decade I've used Startpage or DuckDuckGo. I stopped using Google a long time ago. (Yes, I know SP uses Google results; please don't explain that to me.)

I'm searching for covers of books for slides. In the past, I'd do an image search, in quotes, for the book title. Boom, there are cover images.

Today, no matter what I do, I see loads of obviously SEO-tainted results.

Is this just the case across the board now?

Search Engine Roundtable: Bing Puts Ads Within Features Snippets Named You Might Also Like. “I don’t know if you might also like this, you probably won’t but Bing is dropped ads in their featured answers, featured snippets. They are calling these ads ‘You might also like.'”

Electronic Frontier Foundation: How Do You Solve a Problem Like Google Search? Courts Must Enable Competition While Protecting Privacy.. “Antitrust enforcers have proposed a set of complementary remedies, from giving users a choice of search engine, to forcing Google to spin off Chrome and possibly Android into separate companies. Overall, this is the right approach. Google’s dominance in […]

@danie10 Something came in to my mind:
When #searchengines do not list results from #peertube it is no surprise, that people don't find that content!
I don´t know about others, but I'm using #qwant since long now and they don't. I just messaged them via their contact form about that. Don't know, if anybody ever really thought about that.
Wondering, if @Qwant is official... ^^

I have no idea what’s going on …
I search for “maapl.net” and I get everything except for maapl.net

Is it being blocked my microsoft (DuckDuckGo uses Bing)?

I was able to get to it a few days ago (great search I/F by the way, based on searxing search metaengine/db)

Now, zip! Can’t get to it.
Anyone else not seeing it in their search engines? Does anyone know why?

@ai6yr Don’t mean to hijack the thread, about search engines, but seems the same goes for browsers.

Many people recommend Vivaldi. A blog post they created just a couple months ago says Vivaldi won’t use ai, but if you look at their new Translate Feature, it’s run by ai. Did they do an about-face? Or am I misunderstanding? Is it a feature you can just turn off? vivaldi.com/features/translate Not finding many people talking about this.

@wikipedia has a nice comparison of #SearchEngines listed in tables. 🔍

"The first table lists the company behind the engine, volume and ad support and identifies the nature of the software being used as #FreeSoftware or #ProprietarySoftware. The second and third table lists internet #privacy aspects along with other technical parameters, such as whether the engine provides personalization (alternatively viewed as a filter bubble)."

Good lord, I didn't realise it was so hard to get the information you want from search engines 😳

https://danluu.com/seo-spam/

I've done a lot of researche, especially for Snipette, to the extent that skipping through bad results or rapidly retrying different combinations to get something that works has become second nature to me—as has digging deeper into sites to get better links.

At least, I hope so. The alternative is that I'm imbibing and spewing that same misinformation too 🫢

Thanks for the help ref fediscience.org/@sbrl/11372631, Fediverse :fediverse:! 💕 I thought I'd do a poll of some of the suggestions.

Vote will decide the name, tho I will have the final say o/ 📊

FediScience.orgStarbeamrainbowlabs (@sbrl@fediscience.org)Attached: 2 images HELP ME Fediverse :fediverse: ! 🥺 I need a name for an open source :opensource: project I'm working on. Please suggest anything in comments! I'm kinda stumped. It's a self-hosted AI-enhanced image search engine - see rough design sketches attached. --------- The Plan™: Basically it'll index all images in a given directory with 2 mechanisms: 1. Exif / meta data + filepaths 2. AI (currently CLIP) embeddings → vector DB ....then there'll be a web interface that lets you enter search terms & filter by various things like filename, exif fields, etc Quite early in development, but got the embedding worker done today! Aim is for it to run comfortably on a Raspberry Pi 4 that also has other things running on it. Still to do: - 🌐 Web interface - 🌄 Exif indexer - 🥔 Quantise CLIP etc for lower resource usage, go looking for better models - :opensource: Open source the code, but need a name for the project first! - 💭 Lotsa stuff I forget Tech: - 🟢 Node.js (pure JS libraries where possible) - 🍇 VectorDB: https://www.npmjs.com/package/hnsw (potential issue: this is in-memory or IndexedDB) - 🌄 Exif DB: https://www.npmjs.com/package/njodb ('cause I hate working with databases 'cause they're boring - sql ESP) - :python: Python worker 4 embedding/AI stuff: PyTorch, CLIP #AI #SelfHosting #OpenSource #NamingThings #IsHard #NamingThingsIsHard
