It’s time to talk about vaccines in Africa, where it's estimated that in 2023 they saved 1.8 million lives, nearly half the global figure of 4.2 million – largely thanks to the 'Big Catch-Up,' from WHO, UNICEF, Gavi and partner governments.

In related news, Mali has become the 20th African country to introduce a vaccine for malaria and the first to implement a hybrid approach: children will receive the first three doses based on age, with the fourth and fifth doses administered seasonally ahead of the high malaria transmission season. #vaccines #Africa #health #globalhealth #world #news afro.who.int/news/vaccination-

What is happening is, quite simply, annihilation. Yet our politicians keep funding it and media outlets normalize it"

"Americans may not agree about much, but it’s clear they are angry about the degree to which corporations constrain our choices about our health and our bodies...But just when we should be demanding more public accountability and reliability, we seem to be turning away from the idea that health is a collective endeavor, a public good at all, and retreating into the rhetoric of personal responsibility. But the result has been that, in little more than a month, America has transformed itself from a preeminent #GlobalHealth leader into an untrustworthy has-been. Undermining even one of these institutions would have posed a serious threat; gutting them all at once is an invitation for future outbreaks.

#DOGE’s slash-&-burn campaign has hit everything from the #NIH to the National #Weather Service. The cuts to #GlobalHealth, however, are especially alarming. It’s unclear what #Musk thought would happen when he fed the #USAID “into the wood chipper,” as he proclaimed w/gleeful indifference on X, the social-media megaphone he owns. Ditto what #Trump thought when he withdrew the #US from the #WHO & effectively muzzled the #CDC.

The Diseases Are Coming

#ElonMusk’s slash-&-burn govt tear will have lasting effects on #GlobalHealth.

At #Trump’s 1st Cabinet meeting, last month, #Musk …admitted that #DOGE had “accidentally canceled very briefly” #Ebola-prevention programs. After a…chuckle, he claimed that the oversight had been swiftly corrected. But it wasn’t. The truth is far more disturbing—this admin…has actively dismantled the infrastructure…to detect & confront deadly pathogens.

Elisha Dunn-Georgiou, president & CEO of the #GlobalHealth Council, said the situation is "horrible." She said that even some of the programs that had received waivers for being "life saving humanitarian assistance”–including ones that provided #HIV medications–have now received termination notices.

"This is a global health #massacre," said one #humanitarian ofcl, who isn't authorized to speak on behalf of their org.
