🌏 Shaheen falcon (Falco peregrinus peregrinator)

The shaheen falcon, also known as the black shaheen, is a subspecies of the peregrine falcon, and is known for its powerful build. It displays blackish upperparts, rufous underparts with dark streaks, and a white throat sharply contrasted by a black face mask. Distinctive rufous underwing-coverts are also present. These falcons inhabit southern Asia, ranging from India and Sri Lanka to southeastern China. They prefer rocky and hilly terrains, often seen perched on cliffs or rock pinnacles. Shaheen falcons are swift predators, known for their incredible diving speeds when hunting. They primarily target other birds, capturing them in mid-air. They are typically solitary or found in pairs, and are known to mate for life.

Conservation status: Vulnerable

diese jungen turmfalken in meiner unmittelbaren 'nachbarschaft' zu sehen (wortwörtlich, das ist das dach des nachbarhauses) hat mich sehr erfreut :)
ich hoffe sehr, dass sie auch dieses jahr wieder eine brut erfolgreich hier großziehen können.

2 junge braun-beige gemusterte falken sitzen auf einem gewellten ziegelroten und flechtenbewachsenen dach, an der kante, sie haben mich bemerkt, haben sich uns halb zugewandt und gucken direkt in die kamera. bis gerade eben waren es noch 3, einer ist aufgeschreckt.
sie sind noch recht fluffig und etwas gedrungen, das ist wohl ihrer jugend geschuldet.
im vordergrund stört ein katzennetz unscharf im bild.

🌎 Crested caracara (Caracara plancus)

The crested caracara, also known as the Mexican eagle, is a striking bird of prey with a black body, white patches on its neck and wings, and a bright orange-red cere (the fleshy area at the base of its beak). It has a long, hooked beak and a distinctive crest on its head. These birds are found in a variety of habitats across the Americas, from grasslands and savannas to coastal regions. They are opportunistic feeders, eating everything from carrion and insects to small mammals and reptiles. Two subspecies are recognised.

Peregrine Falcon, Falco peregrinus, which came to sit and squawk in the big gum tree in our back yard. It hung around for quite a while. Think it had downed one of the many Spotted Doves in the area, but next door's cat was keeping it from its prey...
