#MythologyMonday: Why were all the mirrors in Emain Macha once covered?
`In Lough Rudraige the king of #Ulster, #Fergus mac Léti, encountered a water monster called a #Muirdris, which frightened him so much that his head turned around to face his back. He survived, but his #druids faced the difficult question of whether this change made him a blemished king and therefore unfit to reign. Through some loophole of interpretation, they determined that having one’s head on backward was not a blemish, but to keep Fergus from knowing what had happened, they covered all the mirrors in Emain Macha, the great royal residence of Ulster. And so Fergus lived happily enough for seven years, until a woman he had mistreated revealed the truth. Fergus returned to Loch Rudraige and killed the muirdris, but fell dead of exhaustion afterward, his head still facing backward.`

#LegendaryWednesday: `The #druids were inquisitive and accurate scholars, sophisticated historians with great memory, intelligent doctors and jurists, and poets with an innate sense of heroic grandeur.
Each of them had the right to sacrifice because of their function. Therefore, there is no separate function of the ‘sacrificer’.
The druid alone has the power to bind and unbind through his word and his magic power.` #Celtic

#LegendaryWednesday: `The #druids lived entirely in the sacred realm...., as active participants, indeed creators. The sacred is the space of the druid, who for this reason neither wants to nor can become king, as kingship is a worldly task that is only sacralised through his contact. His only possible ‘sin’ - of which we have only one example - is usurpation.
Without the king's mediation, the majority of the druid's services could not reach the rest of the people. Accordingly, the harmonious and lasting agreement between druid and king is essential for social balance, as communication between the human and divine realms runs through them. This is why no #Celtic society can function without a druid and a king.`

#BookologyThursday: „The various legends all claim Hy-Brasil to be an island paradise, populated either by the Gods, or #druids. In #Irish #mythology, the #Otherworld was divided into two realms, that of the Sidhe in their hollow hills, and the other being the island lands ruled by #Manannán, God of the Sea. Also known as the Blessed Isles, they lay ‘beyond the ninth wave', gentle places of peace, beauty, healing and eternal life.
Manannán’s lands were not seen as the land of the dead, as portrayed by Christian belief, but as the land of the ever living, of the ever young. Mortals were only allowed there if invited by either the King himself, or his daughters.“ #Celtic

`Some stories of the naming of the wren tell that ist name meant “druid bird”, the draoí éan, with which those scholars of the #Celts of #Wales agree, along with many legends. Another Old Irish name for the Wren is “Drùi donn” or “the brown druid”.
The wren was seen by #druids as a voice which could carry messages to the #Otherworld, and the patterns of the flights of wrens were carefully studied for answers, warnings and prophecies from the spirits and gods.`

The birch hat (diameter 35 cm) of the man from the burial mound in #Hochdorf distinguished him from the other members of his tribe.
`He was not only a tribal leader, he also led the sacrifice. It is therefore reasonable to assume that we are dealing here with a #sacral king, the forerunner of the #druids.
The state archaeologist of Baden-Württemberg, Dirk Krausse, explains two other unusual finds: `With a heavy iron axe, the deceased apparently killed defencible sacrificial animals (deer, cattle) by striking them on the forehead. A spear was then used to kill the animals with a blow to the heart.`#Celtic

`Ritual insignia such as crowns differentiated #druids from the secular community. This iron crown from Roseldorf – the only #Celtic ceremonial headwear from mainland Europe – dates to 330-150 BC. It was destroyed on purpose before sacrifice.`

More on #Druids.

'Some historians have questioned whether the Greco-Roman writers were accurate in their claims. J. Rives remarked that it was "ambiguous" whether druids ever performed such sacrifices, for the Romans and Greeks were known to project what they saw as barbarian traits onto foreign peoples including not only druids but Jews and Christians as well, thereby confirming their own "cultural superiority" in their own minds.'
