This was really interesting and horrifying to read. It makes me want to buy a $20 burner smart phone for online shopping with a VPN.

But even scarier than the price gouging stuff, how do I know that Rite Aid didn’t sell information about me they obtained from facial recognition software when I went into their store/pharmacy to the government? They know I’m disabled because I’m on Medicare and I’m younger than 65. My disability doesn’t involve my ability to walk around a store, but if yours does will Rite Aid tell the government that they have video of you walking for 10 minutes just fine? Will that mess with your disability review? Maybe, who would even know?

If the latest alleged data breach at X is accurate, can we please, pretty please, *follow and enforce* the obligation of transparency, accountability, and prompt disclosure in Europe under the GDPR?
I mean, failing to comply with the breach notification requirements could result in fines of *just* around 2% of X's annual turnover 🤔

Twitter, #X, hit by massive data breach potentially impacting 2.8 billion users, inside job suspected - “A data leak involving a whopping 2.87 billion Twitter (X) users has surfaced on the infamous Breach Forums. According to a post by a user named ThinkingOne, the leak is the result of a disgruntled X employee who allegedly stole the data during a period of mass layoffs. If true, this would be the largest social media data leak in history, but surprisingly, neither X nor the broader public appears to be aware of it.” #DataBreach #DataPrivacy #opsec #infosec #Twitter #privacy

@Mer__edith @signalapp @purism @PINE64 @furilabs @postmarketOS @volla @ubports @mobian I understand that addition of linked desktop devices can be a security concern from Signal's point of view. However, please allow us the option (after registering/activating on Signal Android) to completely move to the #SignalDesktop and deactivate/deregister the mobile version altogether. You can even make this dependent on the mobile user granting permission.

Thank you for the great work you all are doing for #privacy and secure communication. Although we do not like the phone number requirement, we still consider Signal one of the best communication apps and have on-boarded countless numbers of users.

For those #Genealogists who are interested, this video shows you how to copy your 23&Me results to #GedMatch , after you DOWNLOAD them from #23andMe .

#GedMatch has a host of great tools that allow you to continue analyzing your DNA and build your #FamilyTree with #GeneticGenealogy .

Be aware that law enforcement can also use this particular database. However, you must OPT IN to allow your data to be accessible to them. So far, they have been using it to help identify unknown "Jane/John Doe" bodies and solve #ColdCase crimes.

It's official...
23&Me has filed for bankruptcy.

The company has been rejecting any buyout attempts, but their Board of Directors is now saying that a Court-supervised sale is the best path forward. Part of the reason for their financial troubles was a 2023 #DataBreach that affected millions of customers and hurt their credibility in the marketplace.

Yesterday, California's A.G. reminded consumers that they have the right to demand their data be deleted and that 23&Me destroy any genetic samples. (I would add that you also have the option of downloading your #DNA data and then uploading it to #GedMatch .)

> Pixel devices remain quite a solid choice if kept updated. While it seems that for the standard Google ROM there are working exploits available to perform the FFS extraction in AFU state, on the contrary GrapheneOS additional hardening and protections are effective, and have been so since 2022 [1].

Thanks for the find [1], @privacyguides !

Seems that using #GrapheneOS isn't a bad idea.

> #Cellebrite, as far as we know, publishes a support matrix for Android-based and iOS-based devices monthly or at least multiple times a year. The latest version available at time of writing is version 7.73.1 released on February 2025.
