The family farm - years of 'bashing and burning'

"I bashed the trees down and burnt everything … I was a bash and burner."

"It took about 200 years to transform a once wild island into an agricultural powerhouse,
farmers raised to conquer the land; slashing native vegetation to make way for agriculture.Much of King Island's native vegetation has been cleared for farmland."

#GutenMorgen Trötys, habt einen schönen Ostersonntag.

I stopped off at Bryant Park in NYC yesterday, hoping to see the American Woodcock reported there. I found the park densely crowded and noisy, and did encounter not one, but two Woodcocks, along with a few other birds. This Woodcock seemed uncomfortable and stressed-out. It was initially foraging in a far corner of the park under some sparse bushes, and then hunkered down, bill tucked into plumage, in an open spot on bare soil about 15 feet from its audience, which was about as far as it could get from people in this setting.

Pair of Long-billed Curlews on native prairie in southern AB. There were at least 6 pair already staking out breeding territories. They are nice now, but once there are eggs or chicks they attack by flying at your face with their long stabby bill while screaming at you, and turning away at the last moment before your eye gets skewered (so it seems).
